BAR HARBOR – “Soaring Free,” S.C. Francis’ sculpture of an eagle carved from a moose antler, was purchased recently by two Abbe Museum members and donated to the museum.

The carving was created in 2002 by Francis, a Penobscot artist, and formerly owned by Jackie Currey of Argyle.

The artist and his wife Cheryl are owners of the Penobscot Indian Art in Old Town. He presents programs in schools to teach students about Penobscot traditions.

“Soaring Free” received the Sportsman’s Choice ribbon in the carving competition at the 64th annual Eastern Maine Sportsman’s Show in 2002.

The sculpture is exhibited at the Abbe in downtown Bar Harbor, open 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. daily and until 9 p.m. Thursday through Saturday. The historic Abbe at Sieur de Monts Spring is open daily through Oct. 19.
