ORONO – North Shore starter John Kelly came up an inning shy of his sixth shutout to lead the Spirit to a 6-0 Northeast League victory over the Bangor Lumberjacks Friday night at Mahaney Diamond.
The righthanded Kelly allowed only five baserunners in six innings before lefthander Keith Strickland recorded a perfect seventh inning.
Frank Charles, a former Houston Astro, paced the Spirit of Lynn, Mass., with a double, triple and four RBIs. Eddie Muth chipped in with a solo home run and RBI single.
Sandy Martinez singled twice for Bangor.
Rain suspended the second game of the scheduled doubleheader with one out in the bottom of the first inning. It will be resumed as a nine-inning game Sunday at 5 p.m. with the regularly scheduled game to follow as a seven-inning contest.
