Escaped convict Sidney Dunton was reportedly apprehended in Rhode Island Monday afternoon.
Dunton, 24, allegedly walked away from a minimum-security work detail at the National Folk Festival in Bangor on Friday, Aug. 22.
According to Charleston Correctional Facility Director Steve Berry, Dunton was stopped by Rhode Island State Police while driving a car reported as stolen.
“I couldn’t be happier,” Berry said of Dunton’s capture. “Nobody’s been hurt. It’s a huge weight off my shoulders.”
Berry said Dunton had been serving a sentence at the minimum-security facility after being convicted of burglary of motor vehicles. Though he may face charges from other states, Berry said, Dunton will eventually be brought back to Maine, but not to Charleston. Dunton will be held in the Supermax security prison in Warren to await trial.
