Bangor police summoned a man Tuesday after he allegedly dumped trash in a city cemetery last week.

Office George Spencer reported that Neal Currie, sexton for the city of Bangor, complained on Aug. 27 that a pile of trash had been dumped in the Oak Grove Cemetery on Finson Road. Currie said he found some address stickers on cardboard boxes in the trash, which also included metal scraps and furniture. Spencer went to one of the addresses, also on Finson Road, and spoke with a man, who he said appeared defensive and told him, “It’s all circumstantial.” The man later told Spencer he had hired a Larry Babcock of Bangor to clean out his basement, Spencer said. The items removed from the basement allegedly matched the description of the trash pile at the cemetery.

On Tuesday, Spencer went to Babcock’s house. Babcock reportedly told Spencer, “Yes, I’ve been expecting you.” Babcock then admitted dumping the trash, Spencer said, and was summoned for littering.

Sexton Currie estimated the cost to the city of cleaning up the mess at $229.

Brewer police arrested a man who allegedly menaced another man with a stick Wednesday afternoon. Sgt. Jason Moffitt said he and Lt. Perry Antone received a call at about 6 p.m. from a man on South Main Street who said a Richard Muise, 29, had just jumped out of a car and charged him with a stick.

The caller said Muise took off on foot toward Orrington when he saw the caller take out a cell phone to call police.

Moffitt said the Maine State Police confirmed that Muise was on bail after having been arrested for a prior aggravated assault on the caller. One of his bail conditions was to have no contact with the alleged victim. Moffitt and Antone found Muise on South Main Street near the Orrington line and arrested him for violation of conditions of release. Moffitt said Muise was not cooperative.

The Corner Store in Howland was reportedly burglarized sometime Tuesday night. Penobscot County Sheriff’s Deputy Peter Stone said an employee of the Water Street business called at about 4:30 a.m. saying the front store window had been broken out. Stone said an undisclosed amount of cash was stolen.
