WINTERPORT – The Waldo County Sheriff’s Department is investigating a reported theft of $2,500 from a parked camper at the Winterport Dragway during last weekend’s races.

Nancy Saunders, owner of the Scrapbooking Store in Bucksport, told Deputy Dale Brown that the store’s receipts were taken from a handbag she had hidden in the camper’s closet. The theft occurred Saturday while Saunders was watching her son-in-law compete in drag races.

Saunders told Brown that she arrived at the track in her camper shortly after noon, and rather than carry the money around, she hid her handbag in the back of the camper’s closet.

About four hours later, she was advised that she had won free tickets to a future race and went back to her camper to retrieve her handbag, the deputy reported.

When she opened the closet, the bag was in plain sight and her money and some business cards were missing.

Brown reported that Saunders recalled seeing three men sitting on a nearby rock. He could not say whether they were involved in the theft.
