The state of Maine needs money. According to “Police see extreme speeds on interstate” (BDN, Aug. 29) there “is no shortage” of people criminally speeding and menacing us all, said Maine State Trooper Thomas Fiske.
“Illegal or unsafe speed is a factor in almost 40 percent of fatal crashes,” the article reported. Three or four troopers on the ground and one in the air in a speed detail can net the state treasury more than $10,000 in four hours.
What a deal. They bring in $2,000 or more per half-day per trooper and get the maniacs off the road at the same time. Let’s ask the state to put 10 times as many troopers out there doing that every day. This is where some spokesman will probably say: “Due to lack of money, we just can’t afford the extra staff.” Maybe it could go out to bid?
