BANGOR – The Bangor Wal-Mart is joining several Wal-Marts from across the state to hold their first motorcycle poker run Saturday to benefit the Children’s Miracle Network.
“It starts at the Bangor Wal-Mart,” community relations coordinator Carol Lackedy said. “The motorcycles are going to ride from there to Waterville Wal-Mart, then to Palmyra Wal-Mart, then to the Brewer Wal-Mart and then back to Bangor.”
Participants, who pay $10 to enter, will receive a playing card.
“The winner of the poker hand gets half of the money and the other half goes to the charity,” said Lackedy.
The winner will receive no more than $500. Anything raised over this amount will go directly to the Children’s Miracle Network, which helps provide essential pediatric services to sick children in Maine.
Signup for the poker run is 9 a.m. Saturday and start of the run is 10 a.m. When bikers arrive back in Bangor they will be greeted with a barbecue and bike games.
“One of the bike games is the slow ride where they have to go as slow as possible without putting their feet down for as far as possible,” said organizer Tanya Monroe, who works at the Brewer Wal-Mart. “Budweiser donated an empty keg, so for the guys we’ll have a keg throw.”
Woman participants can compete in a carburetor throw. Men and women can take part in games that involve dangling food items plucked by the motorbike’s passenger.
“It’s $2 to play the games,” said Monroe. “The prizes have been donated from a lot of area businesses including Applebee’s, Olive Garden, B&D Marina, Bangor Motor sports, Ruby Tuesday and a variety of others.”
Anyone who wants to participate is invited to show up at Wal-Mart Saturday morning. Customers also can enjoy the barbecue, which will include hot dogs, chips and soda for around $3.
“All the money from the barbecue and games is going to the Children’s Miracle Network,” said Monroe.
There will also be a raffle for a dinner for two at Ruby Tuesday.
“It’s a way to show off their bikes, have fun and it’s a good ride,” said Monroe.
