Seaplane fly-in lands in Greenville Bangor Gun Show marks 26th year

While school is back in session and the lazy days of summer are quickly vanishing, there’s plenty of good weather left before snow flies – and plenty of outdoor options available.

One interesting event is taking place this weekend, and it may prove of interest to children and adults alike.

It’s the 30th annual International Seaplane Fly-In in Greenville, which runs through Sunday.

A public breakfast is scheduled from 7 to 8:30 a.m. today at the Ready Workers Community House.

Aircraft organizations and pilots’ booths will open to the public at 10 a.m., while contests begin at 10:30.

Among the contests will be a bush pilots canoe race, an accuracy “bomb” drop, take-off and spot landings and taxi slaloms.

The award-winning bluegrass band Blistered Fingers will play at Squaw Mountain Resort at 9 p.m. Saturday. Admission is $3 per person or $5 per couple.

The International Seaplane Fly-In is free to spectators, and demonstrations, contests and aviation exhibitions are held throughout the day Saturday and Sunday at the Stobie Air Hangar, located on the grounds of the Department of Inland Fisheries and Wildlife headquarters.

Gun show set this weekend

Another popular event being held this weekend is the long-running Bangor Gun Show, which will take place for the 26th year.

The show, held at the Bangor Auditorium, runs today and Sunday, and gives firearms enthusiasts the chance to see a wide array of weapons from antiques to the very latest in rifles, pistols, shotguns and accessories.

Proceeds from the show fund college scholarships for wildlife conservation students and conservation “camperships” for junior high pupils.

Show admission is discounted for law enforcement officers and National Rifle Association members with identification. Those who choose to join the NRA or renew their membership at the show will get in free.

The Bangor Gun Show’s hours are 9 a.m-5 p.m. today and 9 a.m.-2 p.m. Sunday.

Izaak Walton League meeting set

The new Izaak Walton League Maine Chapter will hold an informational meeting at Spencer Pond Camps north of Greenville on Saturday, Sept. 13.

The meeting begins at 2 p.m. and is open to all interested in learning about the IWL and why they’re establishing a sportsmen’s and all-outdoorsmen’s chapter of the IWL in Maine.

Special guest will be Mark McCullough of the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service, who will speak on lynx, wolves and coyote snaring.
