Ham, DeYcaza pace Husson UM field hockey beats Siena; Black Bear men’s soccer splits

STANDISH – Deidra Ham’s second-half goal lifted the Husson College Braves to a 2-0 women’s soccer victory over Saint Joseph’s College Sunday.

Ham’s goal came about seven minutes into the second half, followed by Beatriz DeYcaza’s score with about five minutes left to play. Leah Drew made five saves for the 1-3 Braves of Bangor.

Cheryl Northrup had seven saves for the 0-2 Monks.

USM wins two at tournament

At Gorham Sunday, Eva Hanson scored two goals to lift the University of Southern Maine to a 3-0 win over Simmons in the USM Invitational.

The Huskies topped Wheelock 9-0 Saturday.

In Sunday’s game, Devin Edwards added a goal and two assists for 2-0 USM. Marcy Ansley had one save on five shots. Alia Sullivan had four saves on 13 shots for 1-3 Simmons.

In Saturday’s game, Dianna Thibaudeau scored twice for USM and seven other players contributed a goal apiece. Marcy Ansley and Rachel Kwantz split time in goal. Neither faced a shot. Jess Stacy made 17 saves on 41 shots for Wheelock.

Thomas 1, UM-Presque Isle 0

At Waterville Saturday, Jasmine Carey scored on a breakaway with 24 minutes left in the second half to propel the Terriers past the Owls.

Amy Young assisted on the goal. Jessie Craft stopped seven of 10 shots for 1-0 Thomas.

Rachel Larlee made nine saves on 12 shots for 0-1 UM-Presque Isle.

Colby 9, Husson 0

At Waterville Saturday, Kristin Schmidt had three goals and Kaitlin Herlihy added three assists as the White Mules rolled over the Braves.

Libba Cox added two goals for 1-0 Colby. Laura Williamson had a goal and two assists. Elizabeth Riley didn’t have to make a save on the only Husson shot.

Leah Drew made 17 saves on 21 shots for 0-1 Husson.

Lasell 3, Saint Joseph’s 1

At Standish Saturday, Marisa Curtis, Gina DeMico and Jennifer Cronin scored a goal apiece for 1-0 Lasell in the win.

Britney Falite made two saves on four shots.

Kerri Driscoll scored the lone goal for the 0-1 Monks. Cheryl Northrup had 12 saves on 14 shots.

Lyndon State takes tourney

At Fort Kent Sunday, Laura Bailey’s goal in the 86th minute boosted Lyndon State to a 2-1 win over UM-Fort Kent in the championship game of the Lady Bengal Kick-Off tourney.

Unity defeated Nova Scotia Agricultural College 1-0 Sunday. Lyndon State topped Unity 2-0 Saturday and UMFK edged NSAC 3-2.

In Sunday’s final, Autumn Fahey scored an early goal for Lyndon State and Lindsey Maguire made four saves. Jess Gagnon tied it up for the Bengals and Kara Jackson stopped nine shots.

In Sunday’s consolation game, Christine Blakesley scored off an assist from Kyla LaPlante in the 87th minute to power the Rams. Anne Carter stopped 11 shots and NSAC’s Tarah Lewis made five saves.

In Saturday’s first game, Jennifer Kirchoff and Fahey each scored for Lyndon State. Maguire had four saves and Carter had 12.

In Saturday’s second game, Jess Gagnon scored three straight goals to help the Bengals rally from a 2-0 deficit. Amy Kelly added three assists. Jackson had four saves. Jessica Weir led NSAC with two goals and Lewis made eight saves.

Lyndon State defender Chris Riendeau was named the tourney MVP.

Men’s soccer

Maine splits at tournament

At St. Bonaventure, N.Y., Luke Rivard netted the game-winning goal in the second overtime as the Black Bears topped St. Bonaventure 2-1 Sunday in the St. Bonaventure Invitational Tournament.

La Salle beat Maine 1-0 in double overtime Saturday.

In Sunday’s game, Rivard notched the game-winner when he took a corner kick from Adam Chenault and blasted a close-range shot at the Bonnie goal. Ben Wilcox added the tying goal with less than eight minutes in regulation. Chad Mongeon made three saves on 11 shots.

Jahmal Cameron netted a goal for St. Bonaventure. Mike Krupka made one save on six shots.

In Saturday’s game, Jeff Spiker scored on a breakaway 36 seconds into the second overtime period to lift La Salle. Stash Graham made six saves on 10 shots for La Salle. Maine’s Josh Sjostrom stopped four of nine shots.

Rensselaer 4, USM 0

At Troy, N.Y. Saturday, goalie Greg Goehle made three saves on six shots as the Engineers shut out the Huskies.

Taylor Benjamin, Scott Owens, Nick Tsafos and Mike Biggs each scored for 1-0 Rensselaer.

Kane DiBenedetto stopped five of 16 shots for 0-1 Southern Maine.

Union 2, Southern Maine 0

At Schenectady, N.Y., Sunday, Todd VanDeHey and Kevin Dolan each scored a goal as the Dutchmen topped the Huskies.

Kevin O’Connor stopped three of five shots for 1-0 Union.

Dan Hills made five saves on 11 shots for 0-2 USM.

Unity 3, So. Maine CC 0

At Unity Sunday, Tyler Ferguson stopped five of 12 shots for the Rams in the win.

Ryan Howe, C.J. Perry and Peter Taliaferro notched a goal each for 2-0 Unity.

Mitch Peters made 12 saves on 18 shots for 0-1 Southern Maine Community College.

Wildcats win UMPI tourney

At Presque Isle Sunday, Mark Bleser had two goals and an assist as Johnson and Wales rallied past UM-Presque Isle 5-3 in the championship game of the Powerade Kickoff Classic.

Husson rolled to a 4-0 win over Thomas in Sunday’s consolation game. UMPI defeated Thomas 2-1 and Johnson Wales topped Husson 6-1 in Saturday’s games.

In Sunday’s championship, Patrick Soderberg, Eric Gossard and Adam Balavener each added a goal for the Wildcats. Brenton Blanchard stopped five of 10 shots for Johnson and Wales. Darren Belskis led the Owls with two goals. Sebastian Itman added a goal and Matt Watson had 15 saves on 22 shots.

In Sunday’s consolation, Husson’s Dave Richards scored two goals. Lee Bennett and Shane Coffin each added a goal. James Friend stopped seven of 11 shots for the Braves, while Thomas’ Ryan Conrad had seven saves on 12 shots.

In Saturday’s first game, Itman and Belskis scored for UMPI and Tim Dolley had six saves on seven shots. Tyler Colby scored for Thomas and Ryan Conrad had nine saves on 12 shots.

In Saturday’s second game, John Sassman led the Wildcats with two goals and Nick Saunders had two assists. Blanchard made four saves on five shots. Michael Hofman scored for the Braves off a pass from Lee Bennett. James Friend and Matt Goodwin combined for 12 saves on 18 shots for Husson.

Bleser was named the tournament MVP. Belskis, Ben Goodwin and Ryan Scott were the UMPI selections to the all-tourney team. David Richard and Oscar Oddy represented Husson, while Colby and Jeremy Stanford were named from Thomas.

Field Hockey

Maine 4, Siena 1

At Orono Sunday, Traci Rainone and Emily Dooling each scored two goals as the Black Bears rolled to the win.

Dooling opened the scoring for 3-1 Maine with a goal off an assist from Rachael Hilgar. Siena scored to tie the game, but Rainone converted a Jana Ouellette pass for the eventual winner. Hilgar finished with two assists and Karly Bundy added another. Jaye Lance made four saves on five shots and replacement Jamie Morin didn’t face any shots.

Ashley Smaldon scored for 0-4 Siena. Kristen Heyde stopped 11 of 28 shots.

Husson 3, Saint Joseph’s 2

At Bangor Sunday, Sara McIntire knocked in two goals, including the game-winning score with 32 seconds left in regulation, to lift the Braves.

Amanda Brown added a goal and had an assist on the game-winner as Husson rallied from a 2-1 Monks lead. Crystal Strout and Amy McDaniel contributed an assist apiece. Shani Hollins and Jamie Giles combined for 11 saves on 12 shots.

Kristina Reagan and Sarah Kay each scored for Saint Joseph’s of Standish.

UM-Farmington 2, Gordon 0

At Farmington Saturday, Ashley Biette stopped eight of Gordon’s 12 shots to earn a shutout for the Beavers.

Mary Berry and Dorice Reitchel each scored for 1-0 UM-Farmington. Amanda Nimon and Jessica Deans each pitched in with an assist.

Bri Riddle made nine saves on 14 shots for Gordon.

Colby 2, Plymouth State 1 (OT)

At Plymouth, N.H., Saturday, Adrienne LeClair’s goal with 2:18 remaining in overtime lifted the White Mules to a win.

Wendy Bonner, who assisted on the winner, scored the first goal of the game on a penalty stroke. Molly Rice made seven saves on eight shots for 1-0 Colby of Waterville.

Lilly Silva scored for 0-1 Plymouth State and Kerri Brady made 10 saves on 12 shots.

Saint Joseph’s 4, Thomas 0

At Standish Saturday, Sarah Kay knocked in two goals and Jessica Laflamme had eight saves for the Monks in the shutout.

Katie Wight notched a goal plus two assists and Davan Clawson added a goal for 1-0 Saint Joseph’s.

Jen Lane had 23 saves for the 0-1 Terriers of Waterville.

Bentley 1, Southern Maine 0

At Waltham, Mass., Sunday, Kristen Allen scored the game’s lone goal in the first half for the Falcons in the win.

Liz Novis stopped all three shots she faced for 3-1 Bentley.

Jessie Superchi stopped 19 out of 26 shots for the 0-1 Huskies.
