DIXMONT – A 41/2-year-old child was a victim in one of three fatal accidents over the weekend.
Abram Lucas Mauger of Dixmont died Saturday evening after a car driven by a 19-year-old local woman struck him while he was crossing Route 7 with his mother and one of his brothers, who was riding in a stroller.
Despite the valiant efforts made by passers-by to revive him, Abram was pronounced dead at the scene of the accident, which occurred at 7:20 p.m. on Route 7, near the intersection with the Cates Road, according to Sgt. William Birch of the Penobscot County Sheriff’s Department.
A LifeFlight helicopter initially was called but was canceled.
The child is the son of Albert and Angela Mauger Jr. of Dixmont.
Exactly how the accident happened remained unclear Sunday night.
The family was crossing the road diagonally, according to police. It is thought the child was walking a little behind his mother.
Birch said that the investigation is in the very early stages and much remains unknown. A state police accident reconstructionist has been called in to assist in determining the accident’s cause.
Sarah Stanton, 19, of Newport, the driver of the car involved in the accident, and her passenger, Danielle Mehuren, 18, of Unity, were taken to Eastern Maine Medical Center in Bangor because they were extremely distraught after the accident, Birch said. Both women have been released.
Mehuren’s 1-year-old child, who was riding in a car seat in the back of Stanton’s car, was not injured. Family members came to the scene to collect the infant.
A 14-year-old Baileyville boy died Saturday night in a single-car crash in Princeton.
The boy, Larry Arthurs, was injured when the car in which he was riding rolled over at about 8:20 p.m. on the Easter Cut-off Road near the Baileyville town line.
The driver, Britney Corbett, 16, of Princeton, was traveling east on the road at a high rate of speed at the time of the accident, according to Trooper Micah Perkins of the Maine State Police. She lost control of the vehicle, which rolled over, ejecting Corbett, Arthurs and one other passenger.
None of the occupants of the vehicle was wearing a seat belt.
Corbett and two passengers, Chad James, 12, and Todd Dean, 14, both from Baileyville, all were injured in the accident. None was deemed to be life-threatening.
A check of state motor vehicle records indicated that Corbett had a learner’s permit but had not yet received a license. She told officers at the scene that she had a license, and Perkins said there would be further investigation.
Under state law, a person driving with a learner’s permit must have an adult in the vehicle.
Officers will reconstruct the accident, which remains under investigation.
A New York City man died Friday night in a single-car accident on Route 1A in Ellsworth. David McKennan, 46, died at the scene, according to police reports.
McKennan was headed south on Route 1A just south of the Winkumpaugh Road at about 10:15 p.m. His vehicle left the roadway once and returned to the travel lane, according to Sgt. Barton Tokas of the Ellsworth Police Department.
The vehicle left the road a second time and McKennan overcorrected, sending the vehicle into the northbound lane and then off the road where it struck a large tree.
Speed is not believed to be a factor in the accident, Tokas said, but alcohol has not been ruled out as a factor. McKennan was wearing a seat belt.
Assisting Tokas in the investigation are Lt. Harold Page and Officer Chad Wilmot. They were assisted at the scene by the Ellsworth Police Department and a crew from County Ambulance. The state Medical Examiners’ Office also is investigating the accident.
