ATVers’ ride to benefit ‘Christmas is for Kids’

The two-day sixth annual Acadia Area ATVers’ Charity Ride to benefit the KISS 94.5 “Christmas is for Kids” campaign begins at 9 a.m. Saturday, Sept. 13, at the Airline Snack Bar on Route 9 in Beddington.

The second day of the ride begins with a buffet breakfast at 7 a.m. Sunday, Sept. 14, at the snack bar. Admission for the breakfast buffet is $5.50 per person, “and we will provide a barbecue lunch, that day, somewhere along the trail,” Dawn Edgecomb told me.

“Saturday is just a time to get together, and we ask people to bring their own lunch,” she explained. “Sunday is the big ride.” Last year, the event “raised more than $5,500,” Edgecomb reported, “so we hope we get a lot of people out this year.”

In addition to the contributions that riders are asked to raise, and donations they are asked to make, she said, “we will have 50-50 raffles, which we will be selling for $1 each.”

Arrangements can be made with the staff at the Airline Snack Bar to rent a room for either night, and you can make those reservations by calling the Snack Bar at 638-2301.

Those who made their way last year over Route 9 to participate in the ride will remember that construction was still under way but, I am happy to report, that work is completed, and you won’t believe the changes!

Having just returned from a visit with family at my former camp on Beddington Lake, it was a true delight to ride along “The Airline,” and well worth the trip, no matter where you plan to go, off road or not.

For more information about how you can participate in the Acadia ATVers’ KISS 94.5 “Christmas is for Kids” Charity Ride, call Pat and Steve Hamor at 276-3704, or Beverly Sargent at 667-4079.

And happy trails to you!

Alida Coates, president of the Orono Health Association, hopes all who can will participate in an American Red Cross Blood Drive from 2 to 7 p.m. today at the Church of Universal Fellowship on Main Street in Orono.

“As noted recently,” she wrote, “many areas are experiencing a decrease in the number of blood donors. We urge you to consider participating in this important program.”

You can purchase tickets by phone, online, or at the door, for Youthlinks Dream Raffle and Auction, which begins at 5:30 p.m. today at the Owls Head Transportation Museum.

The event features hors d’oeuvres donated by several local businesses and 150 auction items with a $5,000 cash prize going to one lucky winner.

Executive Director Shannon Thompson reports the event, sponsored by Camden National Bank and 105.5 The Bay, features everything from original oil paintings to rounds of golf, travel, a cooking class, a week at a camp or a Florida home.

Tickets are $40 each or 10 for $300, and can be obtained by calling 594-2221, visiting www.youthlinksonline.org or at the door.

Continuing with the celebration of its 170th anniversary, Hammond Street Congregational Church will hold a Family-Style Italian Supper at 6 p.m. Thursday, Sept. 11, at the church in Bangor.

The meal will be followed by a presentation of Bangor history by my Bangor Daily News colleague Dick Shaw. All church members, past and present, are invited to attend.

For more information, call the church office at 942-8651.

While Pine Tree Camp for Handicapped Children and Adults in Rome has ended its summer season, the staff is preparing for its new Accessible Recreation Opportunities program.
