Cub Scout registration
The Penobscot Valley district of the Katahdin Area Council, Boy Scouts of America, will hold a citywide registration night for perspective new Cub Scouts at 6:30 p.m. Wednesday, Sept. 17, at Fairmount School, 58 Thirteenth St.
Boys in first through fifth grades and their parents are invited to attend the event. Scout executives will present information about Cub Scout activities, including, building and racing a car in the annual Pinewood Derby.
The Cub Scout program focuses on fun, outdoor skills, games and adventure. Bangor has several Packs serving boys in every city neighborhood.
The Katahdin Area Council serves Penobscot, Piscataquis, Waldo, Washington, Hancock and Aroostook counties through more than 250 Cub Scout Packs, Webelos and Boy Scout troops, and co-educational Venture Crews. It has more than 6,000 participants and 3,000 volunteers.

Needleworker(s) wanted
Gail Ward, Meals for Me director, is all tangled up in so much yarn donated to the Warm Hands mitten project, she’s hoping someone – or several someones – or maybe a group seeking a community project to get snarled up in, will volunteer to knit or crochet an afghan with the donated yarn. ‘Nutcracker’ auditions
The Robinson Ballet is seeking dancers to audition for “The Nutcracker.”
Auditions for those age 13 to adult are at 12:30 p.m. Saturday, Sept. 13, at the River City Dance Center, 107 Union St.

Call for artwork
Organizers of Mental Illness Awareness Week, Oct. 5-11, invite community members with mental illness to submit art for display. The exhibit will be shown during October at the Bangor Public Library.
Staff and consumers from OHI and Community Health and Counseling Services are organizing Mental Illness Awareness Week events, including the art exhibit. The week will be kicked off by an awareness walk at 1 p.m. Sunday, Oct. 5, at the Twin City Plaza in Brewer.

New play season
Penobscot Theatre Company has announced a return to a standard regional theater calendar for the 2003-2004 season.

Preventing violence
The Penquis Community Action Program Child Abuse and Neglect Councils offers a series of workshops about responding to, and preventing, violence against children.
The monthly series, Our Children’s Future, continues with Issues Facing Adolescents in Central Maine planned from 4 to 7 p.m. Thursday, Oct. 9, at Penquis CAP, 262 Harlow St., Bangor, and via videoconference at 50 North St., Dover-Foxcroft.

Disaster drill
Community agencies will converge on Acadia Hospital Sept. 26 for a disaster drill that will challenge logistics and communications. The drill is part of ongoing training focused on emergency preparedness in the Bangor area.
Taking part are AASF Army National Guard, The Acadia Hospital, Behavioral and Developmental Services-Region 3, Bangor Fire Department, Bangor Mental Health Institute, Bangor Police Department, Bangor Police Department Bomb Squad, Capital Ambulance, Community Health and Counseling Services, Eastern Maine Medical Center, Husson College, LifeFlight, MEMA, Northeast Emergency Medical Services, Penobscot Emergency Medical Services, Penobscot Emergency Management Agency, Pet Therapy Dogs, International-Disaster Stress Relief Dogs, Pine Tree Chapter of the American Red Cross, St. Joseph Hospital and the University of Maine.
Child care training
The Penquis Community Action Program Resource Development Center will offer child care professionals the workshop, Starting Your Core Knowledge Portfolio, from 6 to 9 p.m. Wednesday, Oct. 15, at Penquis CAP, 262 Harlow St. The cost is $10. Child care providers may apply to the Resource Development Center’s scholarship fund for reimbursement of the fee.

Informational meeting

Museum hours
The Bangor Museum and Center for History at 6 State St. will be open from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. Tuesday-Friday, and noon to 4 p.m. Saturday. The museum is closed Sunday and Monday. The Golden Fleece Museum Shop also will be open.
The current exhibit, “From Away: Exploring Bangor’s Cultural Heritage,” will continue until spring. Admission is free.
The museum’s Thomas A. Hill House will be open for docent tours 10 a.m.-4 p.m. Tuesday-Friday. It will be closed Saturday, Sunday and Monday. Tours are $4, $3 for Seniors, free for children. For more information, call 942-1900.

Kiwanis news
Maine now holds all offices in the New England District of Kiwanis for the coming year.
William Newberry of the Brewer club was inducted as lieutenant Governor for Division 3 of the New England District of Kiwanis at the 85th New England District convention held in Danvers, Mass.
The New England District elected Caroline Perry from the Augusta club, governor; Ron Forest from the Falmouth club, governor-elect; and Tim McMahon from the Presque Isle club, treasurer. Art Tilley from the Bangor Noon Kiwanis Club is district secretary.
Brewer Kiwanis members who attended were President Herb Hopkins, Lt. Gov. William Newberry and Secretary Jane Newberry. The Brewer Kiwanis and the Bangor Breakfast Kiwanis received Distinguished Club honors at the convention.
A Division 3 caucus was held at the Hampden Kiwanis Club to vote for future lieutenant governors. Doug Hollingsworth, president of the Bangor Breakfast Kiwanis Club, was elected lieutenant governor-designate for 2004-2005. Nancy Golding of the Bangor Noon Kiwanis Club was voted lieutenant governor-elect for 2005-2006.
Eddington
Historical society
The Eddington Historical Society will meet at 2 p.m. Sunday, Sept. 21, at the Eddington Salmon Club. Organizers say everyone is welcome and encouraged to bring a friend.
Nomination papers
Nomination papers are available at the Eddington Town Office for a vacancy on the Board of Selectmen. Nomination papers, with signatures of 25 residents, must be submitted by Monday, Sept. 29. The election will be held Nov. 4.

Fun night
Maine’s Youth Fish and Game Association will sponsor an evening of fun and entertainment at 6 p.m. Saturday, Sept. 13, at the Old Town Elks Club, North Fourth Street.

Theater auditions
Orono Community Theatre will hold auditions for the musical “Narnia,” based on the C.S. Lewis story “The Lion, The Witch and the Wardrobe,” at 1 p.m. Saturday, Sept. 20, at the Keith Anderson Community House, Bennoch Road.

The Orono Public Library Foundation has purchased two downtown properties for the new library at 37 and 39 Pine St., at the corner of Birch and Pine streets, adjacent to the Senior Center.
Simple life
The Orono Public Library will a host a talk and slide show by David Clement and Betsy Weiss, “The Simple Life Without Refrigeration: Medical Work in South Sudan and Tanzania, and Across the United States on Bicycles.” Sponsored by the Orono Land Trust, the talk is set for 7 p.m. Thursday, Sept. 11.
