Americanism Essay Contest

BANGOR – “Why I Am Proud to Say the Pledge of Allegiance” is this year’s topic for the Americanism Essay Contest sponsored by the Bangor Lodge of Elks 244.

Pupils enrolled in grades five through eight at schools in Bangor, Brewer, Holden, Hermon, Orrington, Carmel, Winterport and Veazie.

Corinth and Bucksport also are eligible to participate in the contest.

Cash prizes will be awarded to the winning essays.

The entry deadline is Nov. 7. To obtain contest rules and more information, call Joan Glans at 942-3616.

Play school classes

HAMPDEN – The child development classes at Hampden Academy will operate a play school for area children between ages 3 to 5.

The program will run three mornings a week for 11/2 hours from the end of September until the end of January.

The program offers students who are studying child development the opportunity to observe children and practice effective ways of caring for children. It offers young children a safe and well-supervised learning environment. Fifteen applicants will be accepted on a first-come, first-served basis.

Challenger ground breaking

BANGOR – The Challenger Learning Center of Maine’s board of directors held a groundbreaking ceremony for the center on the corner of Texas and Illinois avenues. Taking part in the ceremony were board President Bill Buckley, Dr. Sandy Ervin and Rick Cattelle

Husson College Homecoming

BANGOR – Husson College’s annual Homecoming celebration Sept. 20-21 will honor inductees into the Sports Hall of Fame and the Alumni Hall of Fame.

UM faculty exhibit

ORONO – The art of University of Maine Art Department faculty members will be highlighted in the 36th annual Faculty Exhibition, which runs through Oct. 15 in the 1938 and Carnegie Galleries in UMaine’s Carnegie Hall.

An opening reception is set for 5 to 7 p.m. Friday, Sept. 12. Both the reception and the exhibition are free and open to the public. Regular gallery hours are 8 a.m. to 4 p.m., Monday through Friday.

Twenty faculty members are featured in the exhibition, which includes 47 recent works in a variety of media – including photography, sculpture, painting, prints, digital video, sketches, ceramics and large-scale installations.

Faculty members featured in the exhibition are Constant Albertson, Susan Camp, Raphael DiLuzio, John Eden, Michael Grillo, Susan Groce, Nina Jerome, Wayne Hall, Laurie E. Hicks, Gordon Hughes, MaJo Keleshian, Michael H. Lewis, James Linehan, Judith Sasso-Mason, Wally Mason, Andy Mauery, Ed Nadeau, Owen F. Smith, Alan Stubbs and Sam Van Aken.
