DOVER-FOXCROFT – Disappointed after scoring just one offensive touchdown a week ago in their season-opening victory at Maine Central Institute, the Foxcroft Academy Ponies took out their frustrations on the Orono Red Riots.
Foxcroft, the reigning Eastern Maine Class C champion, amassed 439 total yards, including 320 on the ground, while dominating Orono 55-13 in an LTC football game at Oakes Field on Friday night that wasn’t even that close.
Thirteen different Ponies carried the ball, and the first-team offense called it a night before intermission. Foxcroft scored all six times it had the ball in the first half en route to a 41-0 lead, a margin that grew to 55-0 before Orono senior Mo Nazmy scored a pair of fourth-quarter touchdowns.
“The offense really stepped up big time,” said Foxcroft senior quarterback Josh Withee. “We had a tough time last week, but all this week we focused on offense and we came out and played well right from the beginning tonight.”
Withee never scored a touchdown – though he had a 70-yard punt return negated by a clipping penalty – but he completed 4 of 5 passes for 119 yards and two scores and threw a crushing lead block on a 43-yard second-quarter TD run by senior Max Kennedy.
“We have a double counter where if the cornerback shows I’m supposed to flatten him,” said Withee. “He showed on the play and I got the block on him.”
Bobby Gilbert gave Foxcroft a 7-0 lead on Foxcroft’s third play from scrimmage, taking a pitch from Withee and racing 27 yards to the end zone.
The Ponies required five plays on their next possession, the final play featuring a great play fake by Withee before he found Greg Perry open for a 42-yard touchdown pass.
Cody Libby extended the FA lead to 21-0 on a 20-yard run with 2:21 left in the opening period.
Foxcroft added three second-quarter scores on the Kennedy run, a 55-yard pass from Withee to Matt Earnest on the first play after Perry intercepted a pass by Orono quarterback Lance Cowan, and a 9-yard run by Joey Capparrelli with 10 seconds left before halftime.
By the break, Foxcroft had rushed 22 times for 214 yards and had outgained Orono 333-60 in total offense.
“We have some seniors on our line, and they went out tonight and really got off the ball, and all the running backs in the mix just ran behind them,” said Foxcroft senior Lincoln Robinson, a fullback and linebacker who set the early tone for the Ponies with some punishing runs on offense and stinging hits on defense.
Shawn Grass added a 3-yard TD run in the third quarter before Capparrelli scored Foxcroft’s final touchdown from 9 yards out on the first play of the fourth quarter.
Nazmy, who led Orono with 86 rushing yards, scored on runs of 50 and 21 yards. Capparrelli, a sophomore, led Foxcroft’s rushing attack with 90 yards on six carries, while Gilbert added 59 yards and Kennedy had 50 yards.
