‘Treasure Hunt’ seeks antiquers for casting call

Due to its increasing popularity, for the first time ever, the syndicated television program “Treasure Hunt” is hosting its “first open casting call,” Denise Keniston told me.

Keniston is the creator, producer and host of the program, which airs locally at 11 a.m. Sundays on the Bangor Fox affiliate.

The audition for “Treasure Hunt” is 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. Saturday, Sept. 27, at The Schoolhouse Antique Mall in Brewer.

“We’re looking for people who are not antique experts, but do have a working knowledge of antiques,” Keniston explained.

A panel of judges, including Keniston, “Treasure Hunt” appraiser Bruce Buxton and Schoolhouse Antique Mall owner Holly Grindal, “will ask a few questions” of the candidates, “and they will have to do a 20-second, on-camera audition,” Keniston said.

For those unfamiliar with the show, contestants are given $150 and an hour’s time to find and buy items priced well below their actual value, Keniston explained.

At the end of the hour, Buxton values the items, and whoever does the best, or makes the most profit, is crowned the winner.

At the end of the season, the winners play through quarterfinals, semifinals and finals, and the grand-final winner receives an 11-day, antiquing junket in Europe.

Keniston, a 1979 Bangor High School graduate, received her degree in communications from the University of Southern Maine in 1986.

She co-anchored the news on WABI-TV before being discovered by an agent following a Kennebunk piece she did at the estate of former president George Bush.

She went West, returning to Maine in 1997. She worked at WMTW-TV before setting out on her own.

Don Plummer of Old Town, first vice commander of AMETS (American Veterans) Post No. 9 of Old Town, called to report that there has been a change of location for the organization’s next monthly meeting.

The group will meet at 7 p.m. Wednesday, Sept. 17, at the American Legion Hall on Water Street in Old Town.

Anyone with questions or wishing more information can call Plummer at 827-6575.

Zonta Club of Bangor is hosting its 13th annual Champagne Brunch & Fashion Show at noon Sunday, Sept. 21, at the Spectacular Event Center on Griffin Road in Bangor.

Tickets can be obtained at Rebecca’s and D’Lor Beauty Salons in Bangor, Rosen’s in Bucksport and Pretty Woman in Orono.

Proceeds help support local organizations, such as the Maine Discovery Museum, Girl Scouts of America and Bangor shelters.

A new program for individuals who are caring for homebound loved ones is being offered from 6 to 8 p.m. on Wednesday evenings for six weeks beginning Sept. 17, at St. Joseph Healthcare Park on Broadway in Bangor.

With financial help from St. John’s Episcopal Church in Bangor, Home Health & Hospice of St. Joseph is offering the program free of charge to community members.

Preregistration is required for the program, which will focus on topics to help people caring for homebound children, young adults, adults or geriatric patients.

To register or receive more information, call Home Health & Hospice of St. Joseph, 262-1810.

Golf course owners Carl and Irene Brown will host the 10th annual Arthur Jewell Community Health Center Tournament to benefit the local volunteer ambulance service.

The four-person scramble has two flights, beginning with shotgun starts at 7:45 a.m. and 1:15 p.m. Saturday, Sept. 27, at the Browns’ Country View Golf Course in Brooks.

Each team’s handicap must exceed 50.

Carl Brown reminds golfers this event has been filled in the past, so you should plan to register by Saturday, Sept. 20, at the clubhouse or by calling 722-3161.

The top five teams will be awarded $1,500 in prize money: $500 for first place, $400 for second, $300 for third, $200 for fourth and $100 for fifth place.

Kallis Ford-Chrysler is offering a new Dodge Caravan for the first hole-in-one on the 18th, and other prizes will be awarded in several categories.

The entry fee is $160 per team or $40 per person, and all fees benefit the volunteer ambulance program that serves the citizens of Brooks, Jackson, Monroe, Knox and Thorndike.
