WELLSVILLE, N.Y. – The Alfred State College Pioneers racked up 233 yards on the ground and another 339 in the air en route to a 42-14 victory over Husson College in the Braves’ first varsity football game in six decades.

The Braves racked up 307 yards of their own – 160 via the passing arm of quarterback Lee St. Hillaire – but couldn’t slow down the Pioneers’ offense.

“I thought their speed really caught us off guard early, but I felt we played better given time to adjust and I just thought our players played really hard,” said Husson head coach Gabby Price.

Price said it was great to get out on the field for real for the first time since he took the job about two years ago.

“We were really proud of our players. They stepped up and gave us everything they had. The intensity was good on both sides,” Price said. “The difference is there’s more time, basically a whole extra quarter in college ball and we had one time where we were getting worn down on defense.”

St. Hillaire cut Alfred State’s lead to 14-7 with a seven-yard TD pass to Andy Munzing of Gardiner nine seconds into the second quarter, but ASC responded with three unanswered touchdown runs by Nathan Myrick over a nine-minute span late in the first half.

St. Hillaire completed 15 of 27 passes. Brewer’s Justin Spencer led the Braves with 83 yards rushing on seven carries. Defensively, Kevin White led Husson with three unassisted tackles and five assists. J.P. Folckemer had six unassisted and one assist.

Myrick led the way for 3-0 ASC with a game-high 132 yards on just six carries.

Husson plays its first home game this Saturday against Mount Ida at 1:30 p.m.

At Newton, Mass., Saturday, quarterback P.J. Matthews outdueled fellow option quarterback Patrick Bard by rushing 21 times for a game-high 251 yards and three touchdowns, and completing 10 passes for another 171 yards and two TD’s to lead the Mount Ida Mustangs past Maine Maritime Academy.

Matthews’ longest run was 86 yards and his longest pass went for 57, but it was his 68-yard run with 1:37 left to play that sealed the win.

Quarterback Patrick Bard of Winslow rushed for 105 yards on 25 carries and threw for another 211 on 7-for-15 passing. He accounted for four of the Mariners’ touchdowns. Mark Googins had four receptions for 128 yards.

Dan Rosen led MMA defensively with 12 total tackles (four solo) and Wayne Withers had six solo and another four on assists.
