NEWTON CENTRE, Mass. – Thomaston’s Ricky Jones tied a state team mark and broke a course record with a 6-under-par 64 and helped Maine wind up tied for second after the first day of the USGA Men’s State Team Championship at Charles River Country Club Tuesday.
First-round leader California tied a USGA tourney mark with a 5-under-par 135, but Maine was just one stroke back at 136, thanks to Jones’ bogey-free round. Jones and Scott DeWitt of Portland, who shot 72, were the scorers for Maine while Mark Plummer of Manchester had a 74.
Massachusetts and Georgia are also tied with Maine in the three-day tournament standings.
