3rd man dies from burns after seaplane crash

TOWNSHIP 8, RANGE 10 – A third West Paris man has died as a result of injuries suffered in the crash of a seaplane early Sunday afternoon.

William Aridas died early Wednesday morning at Massachusetts General Hospital in Boston. The man, believed to be in his 60s, was being treated for severe burns.

Aridas was listed in critical condition Tuesday afternoon. He died about 3:30 a.m. Wednesday, according to a hospital spokesman.

A Cessna 206 single-engine seaplane crashed during an attempt to take off from Horseshoe Pond, killing Vernon Inman, 77, and fatally injuring Harlan Abbott, 67. Abbott was badly burned during the crash and died at Brigham and Women’s Hospital in Massachusetts late Sunday.

Officials from the National Transportation Safety Board, who are heading up the investigation, and Federal Aviation Administration investigators were at the scene Tuesday. Bob Gretz, the safety board’s investigator in charge, left the area Tuesday afternoon.

His preliminary report had not been posted on the NTSB Web site by early Wednesday evening. Gretz’s preliminary report was expected to be posted within a week of the accident.

Pilot Richard Dill, 32, of Greenville was flying the six-seat seaplane carrying the three West Paris residents when it crashed after apparently trying several times to take off from the pond. The plane’s wing apparently clipped some trees, which sent the aircraft crashing to the ground, where it burst into flames.

Dill was flying for Folsom’s Air Service in Greenville at the time of the crash and walked away with minor injuries.
