Maine author

Bangor Public Library and the Maine Forest and Logging Museum will present a program about Maine author Holman Day at 7 p.m. Thursday, Sept. 25, in the Lecture Hall at the library.

Holman Day (1865-1935) was a popular newspaperman, poet, novelist, playwright and movie producer. The presentation includes a short video covering his efforts to make Augusta into a Hollywood on the Kennebec, a discussion of his novels and a reading of his humorous poems on life in the Maine woods.

Groundbreaking

A groundbreaking ceremony for the Challenger Learning Center of Maine was held Sept. 10 at the corner of Texas and Illinois avenues.

The program consisted of a welcome by board president Bill Buckley, education perspective by Sandy Ervin, and founders recognition by Dick Catelle.

Klezmer concert

Bangor’s Reform Jewish synagogue, Congregation Beth El, will sponsor Tzena!Tzena!, a Down East Maine klezmer band, in concert at 7 p.m. Sunday, Sept. 21, at Bar Harbor’s Jesup Memorial Library, 34 Mt. Desert St. Admission is free, and everyone is welcome.

Lyme disease program

Dr. Beatrice Szantyr will conduct an educational program about Lyme disease from noon to 2 p.m. Thursday, Sept. 25, at the Spectacular Event Center, 395 Griffin Road, Bangor. She will discuss Maine statistics, prevention, symptoms, diagnosis and treatment, short-term effects and long-term effects.

Cemetery Angels

The Volunteer Cemetery Angels of Mount Pleasant Cemetery will hold a baked bean supper at 5:15 p.m. Saturday, Sept. 20, at Father Keegan Hall, St. John Catholic Church, 207 York St., Bangor. The meal will be prepared by Bill Baker of Eastern Maine Community College.

The cost is $5, $2.50 for children age 12 and under. Proceeds from the supper will be used by the Volunteer Angels to clean and repair headstones and to do other beautification projects in Mount Pleasant Cemetery.

City Council proclamations

In a recent proclamation, the Bangor City Council expressed appreciation to the Senior League World Series committee, the volunteers and sponsors of the 2003 Senior League World Series for the hard work that brought 10 teams of the best 15- to 16-year-old baseball players to Bangor from as far away as Guam and Russia.

The City Council also issued a proclamation to recognize the organizers, sponsors, staff, volunteers and city employees who contributed to the success of the 65th National Folk Festival, which drew an estimated 110,000 participants August 22-24 to Bangor.

Campaign kickoff

The United Way of Eastern Maine held a campaign kickoff Sept. 17 at Bass Park. The agency launched an initiative that will distribute more than 12,000 books to children in eastern Maine. Hannaford provided a free lunch to those attending the rally.

Officials at the rally announced that last year donors and grant makers invested more than $3 million in eastern Maine through the United Way. That money funded 74 local programs and initiatives and sent 1,025 children to summer camp. More than 3,300 volunteers contributed their time and energy in United Way programs.

Hot line training

Rape Response Services is offering a free training session for volunteers 5-8:30 p.m. Wednesdays and Thursdays, Sept. 24-Oct 29. After completing the training, volunteers take shifts on the 24-hour crisis hot line. To obtain information, call 941-2980.

Open house

In honor of National Rehabilitation Week, the Maine Rehabilitation Outpatient Center of Eastern Maine Medical Center will hold an open house at its newly expanded facility 4-6 p.m. Wednesday, Sept. 24, Suite 9, Eastern Maine Healthcare Mall, Union Street.

Therapists, nurses and doctors will be on hand to talk to visitors and to give tours. All former EMMC rehab patients, both inpatient and outpatient, and members of the community are welcome. Light refreshments will be served.

Women and Self-Esteem

Women, Work and Community will offer a free workshop, Women and Self-Esteem, 9 a.m.-noon Wednesdays, beginning Oct. 1. The workshop will focus on sources of self-esteem and beliefs about life, work and self. Participants will learn ways to encourage, not discourage themselves. All workshops are confidential.

Youth care training

The Penquis Community Action Program Resource Development Center is offering 30 hours of training in Caring for School Age Youth. Classes will be 9 a.m.-3:30 p.m. Saturdays, Oct. 4, 11 and 18, and Nov. 1 and 8, at Bangor Public Library.

The classes cover the aspects of providing child care for 1- to 13-year-old children in a child care center or family settings.

Nomination papers

Those wishing to run for the office of district supervisor for the Penobscot County Soil and Water Conservation District should call the district office at 990-3676 for nomination papers.

Nomination papers must be received at the district office, 28 Gilman Plaza, Suite 2, Bangor 04401, no later than Oct. 3. Those wishing to vote in the election of district supervisor must contact the district in order to receive a ballot.

Those who desire to run for the office of supervisor must be registered voters residing in the Penobscot County Soil and Water Conservation District. All registered voters in the district are eligible to vote.

Also, one of the appointed supervisor’s terms ends Dec. 31. Those interested should call the district office at 990-3676 for a copy of the appropriate form.

Fashion show

Celebrity models Sarah Pelletier, Jan Smith, Kara Matuszewski and members of the Zonta Club will show fall fashions from seven local shops at the Zonta Club’s 13th annual Champagne Brunch and Fashion Show at noon Sunday, Sept. 21, at the Spectacular Event Center, Griffin Road, Bangor. WLBZ-2 anchorman Rick Tyler will be the fashion commentator.

The Penquis Community Action Program Resource Development Center is offering six hours of training in Getting Started in Family Child Care. Classes will be held 6-9 p.m. Wednesdays, Oct. 1 and 8, at Bangor High School Adult Education, 885 Broadway, Bangor.

The Maine Roads to Quality training introduces the aspects of opening a family child care business in the home and covers state certification procedures, health and safety practices, working with families, child development, community and professional resources, and business and professional development.

Giving thanks

Penquis Community Action Program wishes to thank all those who contributed to the recent Stuff the Bus project, a three-day event that filled a school bus with school supplies for Head Start families in Penobscot, Piscataquis, Waldo, Washington and Hancock counties. Sponsors of the event were WVII ABC-7, WFVX FOX 22, Z107.3, the Brewer Wal-Mart Supercenter and five other Wal-Mart stores.

Cyr Bus Lines loaned the school bus, which was stuffed with backpacks, pencils, paper, markers, activity books, craft supplies, scissors, glue sticks and many other items.

Tractor-A-Thon

The second annual Tractor-A-Thon will feature a long ride on a Kubota lawn tractor to help sick and injured children in central, eastern and northern Maine.

The tractor will leave at 8 a.m. Monday, Sept. 22, from The Aroostook Medical Center in Presque Isle and head for Brewer. Drivers are scheduled to arrive at Brewer Wal-Mart at 5 p.m. Wednesday, Sept. 24. A cookout will be held that evening with proceeds benefiting Children’s Miracle Network.

This will be Shawn Cowan’s second trek down Route 2 on a lawn tractor. And once again Cowan’s fiancee, Carol Lackedy, taking donations and pledges, will drive behind the tractor in the official Ricky Craven Motor Sports 4×4 truck.

The Hermon couple’s dedication to the Tractor-A-Thon and CMN stem from the premature birth of their daughter, Brooke.

“As a volunteer I was aware that CMN literally worked miracles, but it wasn’t until our daughter needed a miracle that we truly understood how important CMN is to children,” Lackedy said.

Dorr’s Equipment in Bangor is providing the Kubota lawn tractor and many local businesses and individuals have pledged their support.

Levant

Culvert replacement

The Phillips Road in Levant will be closed to through traffic the week of Sept. 22-26 due to the replacement of three culverts. The closed section of the Phillips Road is approximately 400 feet from the Glenburn-Levant town line and 400 feet from the bridge in the other direction.

Residents of the Phillips Road and other motorists should determine how this closure will affect their travel plans and plan their week accordingly. The town of Levant will make every effort to curtail this closure.

Orono

Sierra Club program

The Penobscot group of the Sierra Club will meet at 7 p.m. Thursday, Sept. 25, at the Anderson Community House, Bennoch Road, next to the Orono post office.

The meeting will feature a talk and slide presentation on Utah’s spectacular red rock wilderness by Bill Raleigh, regional field organizer for the Southern Utah Wilderness Alliance. Among the topics he will discuss are why Utah’s wilderness needs to be protected, major threats to wilderness areas, and importance of national citizen involvement. The meeting is open to the public.

Winter hours

The Orono Methodist Church has changed to winter hours. Worship service will begin at 10:45 a.m. Sundays.

Wishing well

Orono wants its proposed new library to reflect the needs, wishes and dreams of library patrons. This month Orono Public Library has the equivalent of a wishing well on display where one may complete the following sentence on a form that will be provided: “I wish our new library would have …” Dropping the wish list in the wishing well makes one eligible for a drawing to be held Saturday, Sept. 27. Several people will win prizes donated by local businesses.

The wish lists will be passed on to those who are planning the new library. Library patrons of all ages are invited to participate.

Veazie

Firefighter grant

The Veazie Fire Department has received $10,800 from the 2003 Assistance to Firefighters Grant program. The grant program helps fire departments buy firefighting equipment, fund firefighter health and safety programs, enhance emergency medical services and programs and conduct fire prevention and safety programs.
