McDevitt, Libby join USM staff

University of Southern Maine women’s basketball coach Gary Fifield has announced his assistant coaches for the 2003-04 season.

Joining Fifield is former Saint Joseph’s College head coach Mike McDevitt, 2003 Colby College graduate Bianca Belcher and former USM standout Jessica Libby of Orono.

McDevitt, an Ellsworth native, directed the Monks to a 326-117 record in 16 seasons, leading his teams to nine postseason appearances and seven conference championships. Saint Joseph’s had 12 20-win seasons during his tenure.

Belcher played four seasons at Colby, serving as a captain while earning All-NESCAC second-team honors last winter. Libby played four seasons for Fifield and was chosen for the All-Little East Conference first team last season after averaging 8.9 points and 5.2 rebounds per game.

Colby to honor Levines, Alfonds

Colby College in Waterville will honor the Levine and Alfond families by dedicating the Ludy and Pacy Levine Athletic Grounds next month.

The ceremony, scheduled for 12:30 p.m. on Oct. 11, will be part of Colby’s Homecoming festivities, which will include the 100th anniversary celebration of the C Club, which supports White Mule athletics. The Alfond and Levine families will be honored as the C Club Family of the Century.

Colby will recognize the contributions to its athletic programs by Harold and Bibby Levine Alfond and Bibby’s brothers, Lewis “Ludy” Levine and Percy “Pacy” Levine, both of whom will be honored posthumously.

The Alfonds have helped build Alfond Ice Arena and overhauled the Alfond Athletic Center and provided the naming gift for the Harold and Bibby Alfond Residence Complex.

The Levine brothers were ardent Colby athletics supporters and made countless contributions to the college. The brothers ran the clothing store Levine’s, a Waterville institution from 1891 to 1996.
