Men’s and women’s golf teams representing Maine each finished in a tie for 20th place at the USGA State Team Championship tournaments that concluded Thursday on two courses in Massachusetts.
The Maine women’s team of Abby Spector of Waterville, Pennie Cummings of Wayne and Laurie Hyndman of Cumberland Foreside shared 20th with teams from Wisconsin and Washington, each with a score of 36-over-par 474. That total was 27 strokes behind first-place Ohio.
Spector finished in a tie for seventh place in the individual competition. She shot a 7-over-par 80 in Thursday’s final round at the Wellesley Country Club, giving her a three-day total of 7-over-par 226, nine strokes behind individual champion Emily Bastel of Upper Sandusky, Ohio.
The Maine men’s team of Ricky Jones of Thomaston, Mark Plummer of Manchester and Scott Dewitt of Portland combined to shoot a 13-over-par 433 over three days at the Charles River Country Club in Newton Centre, Mass., to finish in a tie with teams from Florida and Rhode Island. The Maine trio combined to shoot a final round of 2-over-par 142.
Tennessee won the event with a three-day total of 7-under-par 413.
