Vaughn sparks USM victory

GORHAM – Kayla Vaughan of Monroe scored with 15 minutes left in the second half to lift the University of Southern Maine past visiting Bates 2-1 in college field hockey action Thursday.

Vaughan scored her first goal of the season on an assist from Sarah Dolley.

Bates took a 1-0 lead on a goal by Samara Khalique, but Renee Heath tied the game off a Jen Mason assist at 21:37 of the first half.

Jessie Superchi made 10 saves on 11 shots for 3-2 USM. Sarah Judice made 12 saves on 15 shots for 1-2 Bates.

Women’s soccer

Saint Joseph’s 6, Thomas 1

At Waterville, the Terriers scored first, but the Monks came back with six straight goals.

Karla Emerson, Michelle Crisp, Kelly Cyr, Marissa Regan, Tiffany Merrill, and Danielle McLaughlin each scored for St. Joe’s of Standish. Danielle Somma and Cyr added assists. Shana Howard had one save on two shots.

Jasmine Carey scored 20 seconds into the game for Thomas. Jessie Craft faced eight shots and had three saves.

Men’s soccer

UMF 1, Southern Maine 1

At Gorham, Andrew Link’s goal midway through the second half rallied the University of Maine at Farmington to the tie.

Ian Doumas had given USM a 1-0 lead earlier in the second half.

Adam Bial assisted on Link’s goal.

Noah Peet made five saves on 12 shots for 1-2-1 UMF. Dan Hills made three saves on nine shots for 1-2-2 USM.

Bates 4, St. Joseph’s 0

At Lewiston, host Bates scored three goals in the final seven minute of play to pull away from St. Joseph’s.

Dan Bradford scored two goals for the 2-2 Bobcats, while Alex Wolff and Anthony Silva scored one goal each.

Chris Mansfield did not have to make a save to earn the shutout. Jeff Yaeger made eight saves for 1-4-1 St. Joseph’s. Bates finished with a 21-1 advantage in shots.
