Decision disappoints
I’m disappointed to read that the Lumberjacks are one step closer to landing in Husson College’s baseball diamond.
While I’m all for a local sports team to become a draw, the location couldn’t be worse.
Just a drive around the Husson College area will reveal that the campus is completely surrounded by apartment complexes. One is practically sitting on the baseball diamond’s outfield. I wonder where are City Councilor’s concerns were when they pondered 3,000 fans invading this small space?
Not to mention traffic and noise. With the introduction of Husson’s football team, we’re now hearing football drills and airhorns every afternoon.
So now the neighborhood can look forward to yet more noise.
While the rest of the city may look forward to such an outing, those of us living a few hundred yards away from it are simply bracing for impact and wondering why this is being allowed. It’s truly amazing to see the city redo its zoning, effectively breaking its own rules to make this project happen.
Certainly things to remember at the ballot box….

UMPI courts restored
I was very critical of the University of Maine at Presque Isle for letting their six-court tennis facility fall into such serious disrepair as to make the once top-notch facility practically unplayable. Therefore, I would like to be the first to compliment them on the excellent restoration project that has just been completed.
They are once again like the new courts we played on in the ’70s, perhaps even better as there is more tarred area around the court and improved access. The fences are spruced up and the courts look just great.
Compliments go to Jane Caulfield, the UMPI grant writer, for finding a major funding source as well as talking some reluctant local contributors into helping out. The county now has a top-notch facility for its high school, junior high, and regional tournaments. The recreation department county meets take place there as well. Of course, we locals once again have a great place for our friendly matches and we especially enjoy playing under the lights.
Too bad the University of Maine-Orono wouldn’t follow your lead and restore their once excellent facility. Because the UMO courts are in such bad shape, the state team and individual high school championships have been moved from Orono to Bates College, a far drive for the schools up north.
Once again, congratulations on a job well done UMPI.
