HAMPDEN – The Hampden Academy Bronco field hockey team was trying to protect a 2-1 lead against the rallying Old Town High School Indians Monday afternoon.
The best way to preserve a lead is by extending it and that’s exactly what freshman Tini Lumino did.
Lumino scored with 10:54 remaining and sophomore Gretchen Lescord added her second goal of the just over three minutes later as the Broncos upended the youthful Indians 4-1.
Lumino’s goal came a few minutes after Bronco goalie Hannah Thieme made a couple of good saves.
The Broncos worked the ball into the Old Town circle and Amy Ryder creatively set up Lumino.
“I tipped the ball and it hit the goalie’s [Kitty Campbell] pads. I got the ball back, made a spin dodge around the goalie and got it over to Tini,” said Ryder.
“Amy passed it over to the right side and I hit it in,” said Lumino.
Aly Lumino and Lescord staked the Broncos to a 2-0 lead in the first half but the determined Indians showed no ill effects from their 9-0 loss to state record-setting Dexter (51 straight wins) on Friday by attacking the Bronco goal in the second half and pulling within one on an Abby Randall goal with 20:50 remaining.
“We have to come out and play with more intensity in the first half,” said Randall, who converted a Kaleigh Dupuis penalty corner.
Aly Lumino opened the scoring by finishing off a nice passing play with a shot over Campbell’s pad.
Molly Ryan came off the bench and, within a minute, set up Lescord’s first goal by digging the ball out of a crowded penalty circle and feeding Lescord at the far post.
“Molly made a real good pass and I deflected it in,” said Lescord.
“We’re better than our 1-5 record. But we keep having lapses in our defense,” said Old Town co-coach Dodi Saucier. “Once we resolve that and play a consistent 60 minutes, our season will turn around.”
Saucier said Amy Meservey and Dupuis turned in solid performances.
Hampden Academy coach Deanna Hessert didn’t feel her 4-3 Broncos played well but she praised link Jenna Veinote, saying “she kept moving the ball up the field” and mentioned Ryan’s contribution coming off the bench.
“Molly’s been waiting for her chance to play and she came on and made a beautiful pass [on Lescord’s goal],” said Hessert, whose team avenged a recent 3-2 loss to Old Town.
Thieme made five saves on seven shots while Campbell had six stops on 12 shots.
Hampden Academy won the JV game 1-0.
