Greenville selectmen back MMA tax plan

GREENVILLE – Selectmen recently voted to support the Maine Municipal Association’s proposed tax reform initiative to reduce property taxes statewide.

The board agreed that the state relies too heavily on property taxes for education; that the state’s tax structure is too “volatile,” causing an unpredictability of state tax revenues; that the alignment of tax burden among the property tax, sales tax and income tax is seriously out of balance; and that the state’s overall tax burden is a matter of great concern to residents and businesses.

Selectmen believe MMA’s initiative, An Act to Reduce Local Property Taxes Statewide, which will be on general election ballots statewide Nov. 4, will deliver the necessary changes in the state’s tax structure.
