If your child is diagnosed with an elevated lead level

Have your home inspected to identify the specific source of the lead – windowsills, floors, stair treads, etc.

Removing the paint is the only real fix. Short-term, inexpensive interventions include repainting battered surfaces with new paint, covering windowsills and shelves with contact paper and installing paneling over painted walls.

Do not attempt to remove old paint yourself without learning how to do it safely. You may release toxic amounts of lead into your home.

Lead paint dust may be nearly invisible. Clean all painted surfaces at least weekly, using a wet mop or sponge. Clean toys and other objects your child handles frequently.

Vacuuming can raise more lead dust than it gets rid of, unless you use a special filter.

Wash your hands and your children’s hands frequently.

Diets high in calcium, Vitamin C and iron reduce the amount of lead a child’s body absorbs.
