My husband and I just completed our third annual vacation in Princeton, dropping about $1,000 into the depressed economy of Washington County. We found great weather, great fishing and great fun. However, we won’t be back.

Driving home Wednesday from Route 1 to Route 395 on Route 9, we were unable to find a public restroom. We stopped four times: at a convenience store/gas station, and in Brewer at Brooks Pharmacy, the Mobil station, and in utter desperation at the police station. None had a public restroom. No one said, “Our restroom is for customers only.” No one offered to let us use theirs if we paid a dollar or two.

Maybe people in your area don’t need bathrooms anymore, but tourists and travelers still do. We’ll be spending our vacation time and dollars in a region that acknowledges this and makes its plumbing available to strangers.
