Bradford helps Colby topple Middlebury

MIDDLEBURY, Vt. – Senior linebacker James Bradford of Bangor ran back a fumble recovery 20 yards for a touchdown and kicker John Goss broke a school record with a 49-yard field goal as Colby edged Middlebury 15-13 in college football action Saturday.

Aaron Stepka gave Colby (1-1) a 6-0 lead on a 3-yard run on the first play of the second quarter. A 14-yard pass from Mike Keenan to Ryan Armstrong gave Middlebury (0-2) a 7-6 halftime lead.

Bradford stripped Middlebury’s Eric Shanley of the ball and raced into the end zone to give Colby a 12-7 lead early in the third quarter. Goss extended that lead to 15-7 with his field goal, which broke the Colby record of 45 yards set by Larry Sparks in 1979.

Stepka rushed for 68 yards on 21 carries for Colby, while quarterback B.L. Lippert of Augusta completed 6 of 12 passes for 40 yards.

Bluffton 36, Husson 6

At Bluffton, Ohio, sophomore quarterback Jared Owens rushed for 72 yards and three touchdowns as the Beavers cruised past visiting Husson.

Bluffton (2-1) outgained Husson 389-236 in total yards, and built a 29-0 lead before Husson scored with 4:47 left in the third quarter on a 7-yard pass from Lee St. Hilaire to Bryan Lancaster.

St. Hilaire completed 15 of 24 passes for 141 yards, while Josh Nowlin rushed 18 times for 79 yards for Husson (0-3).

At Buzzards Bay, Mass., Massachusetts Maritime scored the game-winning touchdown with 47 seconds left on a 17-yard pass from Mike Blomberg to Max Byrd. Joel Bois then booted the extra point to give the Buccaneers their first win of the season in three games.

Maine Maritime (0-3) had taken a 26-20 lead early in the final period on a 25-yard pass from Pat Bard to Cody Schmidt, but missed the extra-point kick.

At Amherst, Mass., Fletcher Ladd rushed for 138 yards and the Lord Jeffs’ defense posted its second shutout in as many games this season.

Bowdoin managed just 217 total yards. Rob Patchett led the 0-2 Polar Bears with 111 yards on 27 carries.

At Lewiston on Sunday, Reid Palmer and Mark Tilki both returned interceptions for touchdowns as the visiting Jumbos improved to 2-0 on the season.

Bates (0-2) controlled much of the game, holding a 365-215 advantage total yards, but the Bobcats turned the ball over to Tufts in the red zone four times.
