Americanism Essay Contest
BANGOR – Bangor Lodge of Elks No. 244 is sponsoring an essay contest for students in the third and fourth grades in Bangor, Brewer, Hampden, Holden, Eddington, Dedham, Hermon, Levant, Newburgh, Carmel, Orrington, Bucksport, Corinth and Winterport. The topic is “What it Means to Me to be an American.”
The essay must be legibly printed or typed and must not exceed 250 words. Entries will be judged on content, originality, creativeness and how the pupil feels about being an American.
Entrants must include on the back of the essay their name, address, grade, school and sponsoring Elks Lodge-Bangor 244. The deadline for entries is Dec. 5. Cash prizes are $35 for first place, $25 for second place and $15 for third place. Hand-deliver entries to the Bangor Elks Lodge, or mail entries to: Bangor Elks Lodge, 108 Odlin Road, Bangor 04401-6704.

UMaine Homecoming
ORONO – Many activities are planned for the University of Maine’s annual Homecoming Weekend set for Oct. 3-5, sponsored and organized by the University of Maine Alumni Association. Special events are scheduled throughout the weekend for reunion classes of 1973, 1978, 1983, 1988 and 1993.
Activities begin at 3 p.m. Friday, Oct. 3, with registration at Buchanan Alumni House. Other activities are:
. A commemorative celebration in the renovated and expanded Memorial Union from 1:30 to 3 p.m.
. Chef Matt Kenney, Class of 1978, honored with the Alumni Association’s Spirit of Maine Achievement Award at 4 p.m.
. The University of Maine Sports Hall of Fame banquet and induction ceremony at 6 p.m., Wells Conference Center.
. The College of Engineering’s 24th Edward T. Bryand Engineering Recognition Banquet at 6 p.m. at the Penobscot Valley Conference Club.
Saturday’s events include a football game against Richmond at 2 p.m., and:
. The dedication for the Winston E. Pullen Carriage House at 8:30 a.m.
. The opening ceremony for Edith Patch Hall at 9:30 a.m.
. 100th anniversary celebration for forestry and wildlife department alumni at 5 p.m.
. The Black Bear hockey team’s blue-white intra-squad scrimmage at 7 p.m.
. The alumni association’s Homecoming Craft Fair and Food Cafe, 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. at the UMaine Field House.

University of Maine
ORONO – The University of Maine Center for Community Inclusion has received a $1.9 million five-year grant from the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services. Authorized through the federal Developmental Disabilities Act, the grant will support the center’s core functions in research, education, professional development and technical assistance.
In its 11th year, the center assists people with disabilities throughout their lives in areas including early childhood education, health care, employment, housing and other matters related to full community participation. Center staff members work with school districts and other organizations to develop new practices and to disseminate information to policymakers, individuals, families and professionals.
