Bangor police charged a man with criminal threatening early Thursday after he allegedly asked a man for drugs and pointed a gun at his head.
Officer Shawn Green reported that he was on Hammond Street at about half-past midnight when he saw a car surrounded by a group of people in the lot of Leadbetter’s Store, which was closed.
When Green pulled into the lot, the car left onto Ohio Street. He said a man came up to him and told him someone in the car had pointed a gun at his head.
Green said he pursued the car and stopped it near Chatham Street, where he called for other officers to assist. The occupants of the car were lined up on the sidewalk and patted down. Green said he found no gun.
While Officers Brandon Vafiades and Rob Angelo identified the occupants of the car, Green and Officer Brad Hanson started searching the vehicle. Green said he then returned to Leadbetter’s to speak with the complainant.
The complainant described one of the people from the car, whom Officer Vafiades had since arrested on two outstanding warrants and taken to Penobscot County Jail. The complainant said the man from the car, Jonathan Spinney, 18, of Bangor, had approached him and his friends about getting some Ecstasy. When they told Spinney they had no drugs and to “get lost,” the complainant said, Spinney pulled a gun from his waistband and pointed it at the complainant’s head.
The complainant said the gun appeared to be a black 9 mm. One witness said a young girl with Spinney then got between him and the complainant, pushed him back and said they were leaving.
Green said he had the complainant and two witnesses drive by the people stopped on Ohio Street to identify the girl, which they did. Green said he asked the group on Ohio Street about the gun, and various members of the group said it was a pellet gun and that Spinney had brought it along, but none of them said where the gun could be found.
At this point, Green said, Vafiades found the gun under the front passenger seat. The complainant and the two witnesses agreed it was the gun, which was a pellet gun.
Green asked dispatch to have a charge of criminal threatening with a dangerous weapon added to Spinney’s arrest sheet. He also requested bail conditions that Spinney not be allowed to carry weapons, that he have no contact of any kind with the complainant and the two witnesses with him, and that he submit to random weapons searches.
