Basic Bangor handles Lawrence

BANGOR – Bangor football coach Mark Hackett likes to keep things simple, even when facing a Lawrence of Fairfield team dealing with personnel losses and inexperience.

And for the Rams, it means simply getting the ball to Mike Prentiss.

The Bangor senior racked up 220 yards and three touchdowns in one half of play as the Rams rolled over the Bulldogs 40-7 Friday night at Cameron Stadium.

The win is the third straight for Bangor, now 4-1.

Lawrence, which was missing 13 players who were suspended because of violations of the school’s substance abuse policy, falls to 1-4.

The Bulldogs brought just 25 players to face the Rams, who have more than 80 on their varsity roster.

Bangor used three quarterbacks and eight different ball carriers, six of which had at least 10 rushing yards.

“Basically there are 15 kids that play for us right now,” Lawrence coach Scott Walker said “… We got tired, we got worn down. We’ve got low numbers so that’s going to happen.”

Prentiss’ performance Friday puts him over the 1,000-yard mark (1,002) just five games into the season. He has scored 12 touchdowns so far.

He bulled up the middle for nine yards on the Rams’ opening play.

“Mike Prentiss is unbelievable, and the guys block. It’s that simple,” Hackett said. “I don’t know what he got, but that’s what we do. We can throw the ball, but we have to able to run the ball. Everything else is frosting.”

Bangor’s first two drives of the game stalled in Lawrence territory, but the Rams recovered a Lawrence fumble at the Bulldogs’ 34-yard line. Quarterback Shaun Sullivan handed the ball to Prentiss on the first play from scrimmage, and he ran for a touchdown.

He added touchdown runs of 37 and seven yards in the second quarter and was the primary ballcarrier in the first half. Aaron Gallant, who started at fullback in place of an injured Ben Payson (leg) had 31 of his 35 yards in the first two quarters.

Bangor’s offensive line, including guards Ricky Dexter and Trevor Lagrange, tackles Danny Day and Kyle Oliver and center Eric Anderson opened huge holes for the Ram backs.

“We just have one [mind-set],” Prentiss said. “Just run.”

Bangor finished with 398 yards of offense on the ground.

The Rams slowed down a bit in the second half, but still managed three more scores.

Kevin Flynn caught an 11-yard pass from Sullivan for a touchdown. Sophomores Ben Silver and Nick Payson each scored on 1-yard runs.

Tyler Heber was Bangor’s second-leading rusher. He had 52 of his 57 yards in the second half.

Jordan Heath booted four of six extra-point attempts.

Lawrence’s Kurt Laweryson scored on a 1-yard run with about five minutes left in the game. Hunter Loftus keyed the drive with a 59-yard pass reception from quarterback Dylan Costigan.

“They run outside a lot, so we wanted to shut that down,” said Bangor linebacker Brian Lever, who was also filling in for Ben Payson. “The defensive line played good.”

Andrew Ashland and Matt Walker each rushed for 38 yards for Lawrence. Costigan added 16 yards and was credited with blocking a Bangor extra-point attempt.

“Every kid on the team played as hard as he possibly could,” Walker said. “There’s definitely no quit in our guys. They’re all heart.”
