PITTSFIELD – A 2-acre ribbon of land along the north side of Mill Pond on Sebasticook Street is being offered to the town of Pittsfield for a park.
Ryan and Thomas Fendler are donating the property, valued at $52,400, without any formal stipulations or conditions, but have communicated their wish to the council that the town landscape the area for a public park.
“This would be a very generous donation to the community,” said Town Manager Kathryn Ruth.
For many years the strip of land has been home to a handful of older mobile homes, the owners of which were given until Oct. 1 to vacate. The property also contains a small garage.
Once cleared and landscaped, the park would provide an unobstructed view of the Mill Pond for dozens of residents of West Branch Terrace, a senior citizen housing complex, and could become a gathering place for those seniors.
It would mean that the park would join a bank, pharmacy, and a small convenience store that would all be within walking distance of the complex.
Discussions on the land donation began last June but were formalized this week. The Town Council will vote on accepting the donation at their meeting on Tuesday, Oct. 7.
In other business, the Town Council will:
. Hold two public hearings on naming a small park at the corner of Sebasticook Street and North Main Street, and changes in the town’s traffic ordinance.
. Vote on approving an economic development revolving loan to H & H Recycling of Pittsfield for $38,692 for the purchase of wood chipping equipment.
. Vote on writing off two uncollectible economic revolving loans due to bankruptcy. They are $77,060 borrowed by Anthony and Carole Russo of the former Corrianders Restaurant, and $57,333 borrowed by David Starbird of Starbird Garage.
All council meetings are held in the council chambers of the municipal building and begin at 7:30 p.m.
