BELFAST – St. Margaret’s Episcopal Church has scheduled a six-week historical liturgy series for its Sunday worship services.
The series, which begins Sunday, is designed to help people “see and experience first hand how Christian liturgy has changed and adapted over 2,000 years of worship from the first century A.D. to the late 20th century,” the church said in a news release.
The first liturgy, at the 8 and 10 a.m. services Sunday, will involve a synagogue service from the first century, including use of Hebraic chants.
Other services: Oct. 12: Rite of St. Hippolytus, bishop of Rome, A.D. 200; Oct. 19: Medieval Mass of St. Gregory the Great, involving bell-ringing and incense, with plainsong; Oct. 26: Puritan service from 1552, demonstrating Reformation-era worship in England; Nov. 2: Victorian-era liturgy, using King James version of the Bible; Nov. 9: Contemporary liturgy, using “Liturgy of Creation and Redemption.”
The church noted that music will be part of the liturgy only at the 10 a.m. services. St. Margaret’s is at the corner of Church and Court streets. Contact the Rev. Kent Tarpley, rector, at 338-2412.
