UMFK, women’s club to celebrate anniversaries

The entire Aroostook County community can take pride in a very special coming event.

Susan Tardie of the Fort Kent Business and Professional Women’s Club reports that her organization will be the host for the BPW District IV fall meeting.

That meeting begins with registration and a display by area artists from 10 to 11 a.m. Saturday, Oct. 11, in the Teleconference Room of Nadeau Hall on the University of Maine at Fort Kent campus.

The district meeting will be held after a noon luncheon.

What makes this event so meaningful is that the program, “BPW & UMFK Women of Distinction Honor Day,” is being conducted in collaboration with the celebration of the 75th anniversary of the Fort Kent BPW and the 125th anniversary of UMFK.

Fort Kent BPW president Burnette Bowker cordially invites the public to attend this special program.

The program will include not only BPW history but also the close relationship between the university and the organization.

According to information provided by Tardie, the Fort Kent BPW was organized in 1927 by teachers from the Madawaska Training School and the Model School.

It received its charter on May 26, 1929.

The BPW has a long, outstanding history in our state as exemplified by the fact that our late senator Margaret Chase Smith was a charter member of the Maine BPW, founded in 1921, and president of the Skowhegan BPW.

Additionally, a display of domestic violence and dating abuse information is available throughout the month at the Bangor Mall.
