Aviator tribute

The sky’s the limit at Bangor Public Library. Not only will it celebrate the 100th anniversary of the Wright brothers’ flight in December, but this month it offers a reminder that others also were pioneers of flight. Soaring over the library’s popular fiction room is a 5-foot-by-5-foot wood and paper sculpture, a tribute to aviator Alberto Santos-Dumont. Dan Snyder of Brooklin, a multimedia artist who enjoys 19th century portrayals, created and loaned the sculpture to the library.

Santos-Dumont, raised by French colonists in a coffee plantation in Brazil, first won acclaim in France for his dirigibles.

While the Wright brothers were generally acknowledged to have been the first to achieve winged flight, Santos-Dumont was hailed by France and Brazil for what were the first public exhibitions of winged flight. To learn more, call the library at 947-8336, Ext. 139.
