Women with Wings, the Bangor-based singing circle for women, will sponsor a women’s drumming workshop with Ubaka Hill, “Drumming beyond the Edge,” on Saturday, Nov. 1, in Lincolnville.
A professional drummer and teacher for more than 25 years, the New Jersey-born Hill has recorded CDs of original music, among them “Dance the Spiral Dance” and “ShapeShifters.”
She has given workshops throughout North and South America, reminding participants that their mother’s heartbeat was the first drum they knew. She also is editor of Drumsong – Drumming Womyn’s News: Views and Attitudes.
A few years ago, Hill gave a well-attended workshop for Women with Wings and also performed in concert in Blue Hill.
Women filled the space at a retreat house in Stockton Springs, following Hill’s beat on djembe drums and congas, on handmade frame drums and a large “mother drum.”
Some of those attending had played drums for years, while others picked up a drum for the first time as they learned to appreciate Hill’s African, Latin American and Caribbean rhythms – not to mention jazz and Shamanism influences.
The deadline for registration for the drumming workshop is Oct. 10. Call Rose at 276-4098 or e-mail rose@downeast.net.
Ubaka Hill’s concert this year, also sponsored by Women with Wings, will be held at 3 p.m. Sunday, Nov. 2, in Belfast. For further information, call Rose at 276-4098.
