LIMESTONE – Money is missing from the Limestone School Department, but investigators have yet to determine exactly how much is missing or what happened to it.

Limestone police Chief Stacey Mahan said Friday an audit will be needed to determine how much money is missing, but he did not know whether one had been done yet. He said the investigation has been ongoing since May and the amount involved might be $50,000 to $55,000. At least one report put it higher.

Superintendent of Schools Paul Beaulieu was on vacation Friday and could not be reached for comment.

Daniel Gahagan, a former school board chairman whose term on the board ended in June, said he knew about the investigation and believes the issue could go to the Aroostook County grand jury soon.

When contacted Friday, Robert Edgecomb, a current member of the school board, said, “This is the first I heard of it.” Other members of the school board could not be reached Friday.

Mahan is leaving the Limestone Police Department this month. The investigation has been assigned to Sgt. Ryan Fitzpatrick, who is working with a deputy of the Aroostook County Sheriff’s Department.

Mahan said investigators suspected someone in the school department and the missing money involves five or more accounts.
