Jackson, Doyle lift Black Bears Maine tops Wisconsin for Stampede crown

OMAHA, Neb. – Todd Jackson scored two goals for the second straight night to lead 13th-ranked Maine to a 6-2 victory over Wisconsin in the championship game of the Maverick Stampede tournament on Saturday.

Thirteen seconds after Tom Gilbert pulled Wisconsin within 2-1 early in the second period on a power play, Jackson scored a short-handed goal to restore the Black Bears’ two-goal lead.

Jackson scored again late in the period to give the Bears (2-0) a 5-2 advantage.

The senior left wing was named the tournament’s most valuable player.

Maine led 1-0 midway through the first period on Greg Moore’s goal. The Bears had a two-goal lead going into intermission after Prestin Ryan hammered a shot from low in the left circle past Bernd Bruckler with four-tenths of a second showing on the clock.

Maine’s other goals were by Dustin Penner and Tom Zabkowicz, a native of Greendale, Wis.

Penner scored 39 seconds into the third period when he collected a loose rebound in the slot and beat Bruckler. The Black Bears then killed off a four-minute Wisconsin power play.

Michel Leveille had three assists for the Black Bears.

Ken Rowe scored the only other goal for Wisconsin (1-1).

Maine goaltender Frank Doyle stopped 26 of 28 shots. He also recorded his first career assist when he fed Leveille, who made a pass to Jackson for his third goal of the game.

Bruckler made 26 saves on 32 shots.

Jackson and Moore were both named to the all-tournament team at forward. Jimmy Howard, who shut out top-ranked Minnesota Friday night, was the all-tournament goaltender.

Maine continues its season Friday when it faces the U.S. National Development Team in the Mid-Maine Communications Black Bear Classic at 7 p.m. at Alfond Arena in Orono.
