GUILFORD – Police said driver inattention was the cause of a two-car accident Monday on Elm Street.

Shirley Clukey, 77, of Abbot had stopped her northbound 1993 Ford Tempo on Elm Street at noon Monday waiting for a vehicle ahead of her to turn onto Prospect Street. Another vehicle, driven by Ervin Kirk, 57, struck her vehicle from behind, according to Investigator Allen Emerson of the Piscataquis County Sheriff’s Department.

Emerson said Shirley Clukey and her passenger, her husband, Phillip Clukey, 81, complained of neck and back pain. They were treated at the scene by emergency medical technicians from Mayo Regional Hospital. Kirk was not injured, he said. All three involved in the accident were wearing seat belts.

Minimal damage was done to Clukey’s vehicle, while Kirk’s 1992 Buick had extensive damage, Emerson said. No charges were filed in the accident.

Guilford firefighters assisted Emerson at the scene.
