FREDERICTON, New Brunswick – Senior guard Ludmil Hadjisotirov hit a 3-point shot at the buzzer as the University of Maine men’s basketball team edged the University of New Brunswick-Fredericton 74-71 in an exhibition game at Harbour Station here Tuesday night.
The victory gave Maine a 4-0 record in its four-game, four-day pre-season trip to Atlantic Canada. The Black Bears are scheduled to begin official practices Saturday.
“The major purpose of this trip was to challenge and develop our team, and that’s exactly what we did,” said Maine coach John Giannini.
Hadjisotirov finished with a game-high 21 points, including 4 of 6 shooting from beyond the arc. Jermaine Jackson, a 6-foot-4 junior college transfer who joined the team Tuesday after missing the first three games of the trip, added 19 points, shooting 5 of 8 from 3-point range, while Kevin Reed and David Dubois each scored nine points and Eric Dobson added six points, seven assists and a game-high 11 rebounds.
Maine shot 50 percent (13 of 26) from 3-point land for the game.
Maine held a 48-33 halftime lead, but went scoreless during a 5:45 stretch of the second half as UNB-Fredericton scored 13 unanswered points.
The host Varsity Reds took a lead into the final three minutes until Dobson made two free throws to give Maine a 69-68 edge with 2:53 left. Hadjisotirov added two more free throws, but UNB-Fredericton’s Dan Goggin hit a 3-pointer to tie the game with 26 seconds left.
“They played very well,” said Giannini. “They’re a veteran team, they got their crowd behind them, and we missed some shots, which is going to happen at times. But we did a lot of positive things in the last couple of minutes to get the win.”
