OLD TOWN – Things for the Old Town and Nokomis boys soccer teams have gone in different directions this season. The Indians will likely get a home game for the Eastern Maine Class A playoffs, while the Warriors of Newport are hoping to finish on a positive note after dealing with injuries.
Even so, Nokomis was a tough matchup for Old Town as the undefeated Indians overcame offensive struggles and got a goal from Shawn Richardson for a 1-0 victory Tuesday at the middle school field.
It was Old Town’s 11th win – the Indians also have a tie – which is a record for wins in a season for the 13-year old program. Tyler Tracewski’s fifth shutout of the year also set a school record.
The record-setting victory didn’t come easy.
Nokomis (2-11-1) ran a defense which pulled the Old Town forwards offsides 12 times in the game. It was especially effective against Indian forward John Garrity, one of the quickest players in Eastern Maine.
“[The defense] clicked today,” Nokomis coach Bill Freudenberger said. “[Garrity] is one of the fastest kids I’ve coached against and that’s the only way you can do it. Man to man, nobody can keep up with him.”
Garrity, who has scored 14 goals this season, took a shot that hit the post in the first half.
It also took some time for the Indians to get used to the Warriors’ physical play.
“We weren’t on top of our game like we would have liked to be,” Old Town midfielder Matt Petrie said. “Plus they played a lot better today than the first time we played them. It’s been a while since we played a team that could just hit us. It was good. We needed it going into the playoffs.”
The Indians finally got their chance thanks to an obstruction call against the Warriors inside the penalty area.
Old Town was awarded an indirect kick in the right side of the area 2 minutes and 39 seconds before halftime. Chad Dupuis took the initial kick and tapped the ball back to Richardson, who shot the ball through a crowd of players and into the left side of the net.
The Indians didn’t have a lot of time to set up a play, but Richardson knew what he wanted to do.
“I called [the play] once in practice and I told them it would work,” Richardson said. “That was the first time Chad had taken one, and he put it up there.”
Nokomis goalie Zach Wing had 13 saves on 17 shots. Tracewski stopped all eight Warrior shots, including a Chris Dunlop header with four minutes left in the game.
JV: Old Town 6-2
