Book discussion club

BANGOR – Everyone knows Bangor Public Library patrons like to read. They also like to talk about the books they are reading. Area readers who would like to start a book discussion group, or become a member of one, should attend an organizational meeting at 7 p.m. Wednesday, Oct. 22, at the library.

Two speakers will share their book discussion group experiences and give tips to those wishing to start or participate in such groups. Refreshments will be served.

Those who cannot attend the meeting may call Christie Coombs at the library, and she will send information about the book groups formed at the meeting.

Enchanted Forest

BANGOR – If you go into the woods at Sprague’s Nursery from 10 a.m.-4 p.m. Saturday, Oct. 25, you’ll find ghouls and goblins haunting the Enchanted Forest. The cost for a visit is $2 per person. The event benefits pediatric health care services through the Children’s Miracle Network of Eastern Maine Healthcare.

Activities include smacks, games, prizes, hay rides, a petting zoo, witch hat toss, pumpkin painting, cookie decorating, face and nail tattoos, a concession stand and a bounce house.

From 11 a.m. to 2 p.m., participants may follow the Yellow Brick Road to Oz and visit with Dorothy and all her friends.

Penobscot Expedition

BANGOR – James Hunter, a nautical archaeologist from the Naval Historical Center, will speak about the Penobscot Expedition at 1 p.m. Saturday, Oct. 25, at the Bangor Museum and Center for History, 6 State St.

The biggest naval defeat in U.S. history, the Penobscot Expedition occurred when the American army and naval militia scuttled their own fleet in the Penobscot River as they were fleeing from the British.

Dr. Hunter has studied the wreckage in Bangor and will speak about his findings.
