The Penbay Mariners, Eastern Maine’s first-ever junior hockey team, claimed their first tournament championship earlier this week.

The Mariners went 4-1 at the Exeter (N.H.) Seawolves’ Columbus Day Tournament, including a 6-5 victory over the Albany Storm in the championship game.

The Mariners scored 32 goals in their five games.

The Tyburski brothers, Zach and Tyler, who played at St. Dominic High School in Auburn, led the way in the final by combining for five goals.

Brewer’s Robbie Hayes scored the other goal and former John Bapst and Bangor High School goalie Dominic Dinardo backstopped the win.

Penbay advanced to the final by cruising to a 10-3 triumph over the Northern Massachusetts Cyclones in the semis.

Hayes and Tennessee native Jordan Quintana had two goals each against Northern Massachusetts.

The Mariners had lost their third game, 4-2, to the New Jersey Wildcats despite goals from Orono’s Nat Breece and Virginia’s Drew Rosser.

Penbay opened the tourney with a 6-1 win over the Connecticut Whalers and followed that with its first ever shutout, 8-0, over the Massachusetts Maple Leafs.

Brewer’s Spencer Dunbar posted the shutout and his former Witch teammate, Jeremiah Richter, had two goals. Hayes added two assists.

The Mariners are coached by former Bangor High, Foxcroft Academy and Brewer High coach Bill Schwarz.
