Again I commend the Bangor Daily News for its editorial and opinion pages. They daily provide readers with knowledge and insight regarding current affairs.

I completely agree with the op-ed by John Sovis, “Insight gained through knowledge of history” (BDN, Oct. 2). For too long a knowledge of history has been lacking in our schools. We need to know the past to help us understand the present. Being taught to think should have priority over laptops.

History teaches us to think and to understand and to make decisions for ourselves. Perhaps if our minds contained knowledge of history we would be alert to the destruction of our democracy as evidenced by our present regime headed by a Supreme-Court-appointed president and a dictatorial attorney general.
