BREWSTER, Mass. – Husson College of Bangor finished the first day of the New England Intercollegiate Golf Association Championship with an 18-over-par 306, putting the Braves in a third-place tie with Harvard in the overall scoring.

Rhode Island shot a 10-over 298 at the Captains Golf Course to lead in the 36-hole event, which continues today. Connecticut was second at 12 over.

Coach Bruce MacGregor’s Braves, seeking their third straight New England Division III title, were led by senior Corey Poulin of Jackman. Poulin shot a 3-over 75, putting him in a tie for ninth among the individual competitors.

J.J. Frost of Calais and the University of Southern Maine fired an even-par 70, one stroke behind individual leader Jordan Burke of UConn. USM was in 12th place overall at 322.

Husson held an 11-stroke lead over its nearest Division III foe, Wentworth Institute of Technology (317). Freshman Devon Raymond of Waterville was second for the Braves with a 76, followed by Ross McGee of Fairfield (77), Joe Finemore of Sidney (78), and Heath Morang of Gardiner (82).

At Biddeford, Michal Shapiro took a throw-in from Katherine Donoghue and sent in a high left-footed shot for 25 yards out.

Rebecca Metzler faced two shots and made one save for the 10-2 Polar Bears. Amanda Brown made five saves on 11 shots for the 3-9-1 Nor’easters.
