Fire destroys cabin at Bar Harbor farm

BAR HARBOR – A wood stove has been blamed for a Monday evening fire that destroyed a cabin at Sweet Pea’s Farm on Route 3, Fire Chief David Rand said Tuesday.

There were no injuries, Rand said.

The blaze was reported at 6:40 p.m. and the scene was cleared by 8:30 p.m., he said.

Trenton and Mount Desert provided aid to 22 Bar Harbor firefighters at the scene of the fire. Rand said the crew used water from a pond on the farm to douse the blaze.

“We put a hydrant in five years ago, so we were in pretty good shape,” Rand said.

Farm owner Matt Gerald said Tuesday the cabin was mostly empty at the time of the fire. The people who lived there were moving into town, he said, and had moved most of their belongings.

He said the cabin had little value, and he did not know whether it was insured.

Rand said the State Fire Marshal’s Office and Bar Harbor fire officials investigated the cause Monday evening and determined a wood stove was to blame.
