Recruiting Barracudas

BANGOR – The Bangor YMCA and Bangor-Brewer YWCA Barracuda Swim Team is seeking interested swimmers for the winter season. The program offers a new full-time coach, new energy and optimum pool time.

The Barracudas Swim Team has an open door recruiting schedule for swimmers throughout the season on an individual basis. Interested individuals and parents are invited to drop in, learn more about the team, see coach-swimmer interaction and get in the water to participate.

Those interested may arrive between 5 and 5:30 p.m. on one of the following dates: Oct. 27, Nov. 18, Nov. 26 or Dec. 15 at the Aloupis Pool at the YWCA at the corner of Union and Second streets in Bangor.

First-time competitive swimmers, or those without any previous competitive swim experience – considered a novice – will need to demonstrate the following skills before joining the Barracudas:

. Backstroke – 25 yards of continuous swimming.

. Freestyle – 25 yards of continuous swimming. Rotary breathing is desirable, but not required to begin swimming with the Barracudas.

. Front dive from side of swimming pool – desirable, but not required to begin swimming with Barracudas.

. Six years old – desired minimum age for participation.

Swimmers who successfully meet the requirements may complete the application process on site.

Honor for Skip Chappelle

BANGOR – Mayor Nichi Farnham and the Bangor City Council issued a proclamation Oct. 15 to recognize the contributions Thomas “Skip” Chappelle has made to the Bangor region.

Chappelle was hailed for making numerous contributions to the Bangor region as a basketball star at Old Town High School, the Maine Central Institute and the University of Maine – where he established the all-time win record as basketball coach from 1971 to 1988, and for his recent induction into the New England Basketball Hall of Fame.

In addition to his sporting accomplishments, Chappelle was recognized as being a longtime champion of economic development throughout the region and for developing trade shows and expos at Bass Park, bringing thousands of visitors to the community. He was instrumental in bringing representatives of the New England Patriots to Bangor in 2002 as part of their regional tour after their Super Bowl victory.

Throughout his career, the proclamation stated, Chappelle has been an unabashed cheerleader for Maine and the Bangor region and has worked tirelessly to support many civic and charitable causes.

Third Watch hockey game

BANGOR – Bangor Fire Department’s Third Watch Hockey Club will square off against the Boston Firefighter’s Hockey Club at 6 p.m. Saturday, Oct. 25, at the Sawyer Arena.

The charity game will feature a 50-50 raffle, free prizes and other activities, including a chance to meet the players. Proceeds will benefit Bangor Fire Department Capt. Frank Rollins and his wife, Lynne, who is dealing with a serious illness requiring travel to Boston for medical treatment.

Admission to the game is $5 per person. Children under 12 attend free. For more information, call Troy Lare at 942-6335.

Storm Travel teams

BANGOR – The YMCA will accept registrations for its youth basketball leagues and the Bangor YMCA Storm travel teams beginning Oct. 27. Youth leagues are for 4-year-olds through 12th-graders.

Storm travel teams are for grades five to six and grades seven to eight, boys and girls. Tryouts for the Storm are Nov. 1 and 2. Volunteer coaches are needed for all leagues and must attend a coaches meeting at 6 p.m. Oct. 23 or 30 at the YMCA. Practices begin Nov. 8. Financial assistance is available. Basketball clinic

BANGOR – The Bangor YMCA and the University of Maine men’s and women’s basketball teams will conduct a free clinic for youths in kindergarten through grade eight on Nov. 1 at the Bangor YMCA. Coach John Giannini and staff will conduct their clinic from 9 to 11 a.m.

Women’s assistant coach Tara Morrison and the women’s team will conduct their clinic from 1 to 2 p.m. Children coming to the clinic will receive a ticket to the UM Blue-White games on Nov. 2. Contact Lance Cote at 941-2815 for more information.

Boston Celtics trip

BANGOR – The Bangor YMCA will host a trip to see the Boston Celtics play the New Orleans Hornets on Dec. 31. Tickets are on sale to the public at the YMCA. Youths ages 9 or older may attend the trip while being chaperoned by the YMCA. An adult must accompany youths under 9. Cost of the trip is $43 per person. Youth archery program

BANGOR – The Bangor YMCA will accept registrations for its youth archery program beginning Oct. 27. The class is taught from 5:15 to 6 p.m. and 6 to 6:45 p.m. Thursdays at the Columbia Street Church gym. Instruction is available for beginners, ages 8 to 16. The program is free for members, $35 for nonmembers. Class begins on Nov. 13. Financial assistance is available. Contact Lance Cote at 941-2815 for information.

Youth air riflery

BANGOR – The Bangor YMCA will accept registrations for its youth air riflery program beginning Oct. 27. The class for ages 10 to 16 is taught from 5:15 to 6 p.m., 6 to 6:45 p.m., and 6:45 to 7:30 p.m. Wednesdays at the Columbia Street Church gym. All equipment is provided.
