Crothers, Trojans edge ‘Jammers

ROCKPORT – Brenna Crothers scored on a breakaway with 5:51 left in the second half as No. 10 Mount Desert Island upset No. 7 Camden Hills 2-1 Thursday in an Eastern Maine Class B girls soccer preliminary game.

MDI’s Sarah March assisted on the winning goal and Bekka Paine scored off an assist from Katie Klaver to give the 5-7-3 Trojans an early lead. Carmen Forzetting of 10-5 Camden Hills tied it up when she scored off a corner kick.

Jessica Norwood made seven saves on 10 shots for MDI. Beth Herron stopped eight of 10 shots for the ‘Jammers.

Field hockey

Class B

Belfast 3, Hampden 2

At Belfast, Sara Flagg scored two goals in the second half to help lead the No. 3 Lions to the win over the No. 6 Broncos.

Kate Ross scored on a penalty stroke with three minutes left in the first half for 11-4 Belfast and Celia Grotz made an assist. Amanda Littlefield and Liz Anderson combined to make seven saves on nine shots.

Aly Lumino scored on a penalty corner in the first half for 8-7 Hampden and Melissa Mann scored with 32 second left. Nancy Wood stopped 12 of 15 shots.

Class C

Central 2, Boothbay 1

At Corinth, first-half goals by juniors Jenny Rollins and Kristina Gallagher lifted the No. 2 Red Devils past the Seahawks.

Rollins gave Central a 1-0 lead on an assist from Gallagher 7:43 into the contest. Kaitlyn Garrett responded with an unassisted goal for No. 7 Boothbay to tie the game less than five minutes later.

Gallagher scored the game-winner on a breakaway set up by Rollins’ long lead pass with 1:18 left in the first half.

Tiffany Tilton made seven saves on eight shots for 12-3 Central. Corena Borjas made 17 saves on 30 shots for 7-6-2 Boothbay.

Winthrop 3, Mattanawcook 0

At Winthrop, Nicole Emery scored two goals and made one assist to lead No. 3 Winthrop past No. 6 Mattanawcook of Lincoln.

Steph Convery netted a goal for 13-2 Winthrop and Mary Zimmerman made one assist. Tabatha Therren stopped both shots that she faced.

Colleen Cloran and Ashley Emery combined to make 10 saves on 22 shots for 7-7-1 Mattanawcook.
