While the state’s youngsters will get a one-day head start on the deer-hunting season today, most hunters will wait until next Saturday to head into the woods.

But before they do so, many will look to pack away some hearty chow.

Luckily, a variety of groups are willing to feed those hungry hunters each season. This year is no exception, as several hunter’s breakfasts are on tap.

Here is a list of some hunters breakfasts planned for Nov. 1.

. At Milo, the 36th annual Hunters’ Breakfast at Penquis Valley High School is set for 4:30-8:30 a.m. There will be a buffet of ham, eggs, baked beans, biscuits, pancakes, juice, and coffee. Tickets cost $3.50 in advance, $4 at the door, and are available from any freshman class member

. At Dedham, the Ultimate Hunters’ Breakfast will be held at the Dedham School Gym, Route 1A. The price is $3 for children, $5 for adults and $12 for families. The breakfast benefits the Dedham School Class of 2005. Call 843-6498 for tickets, or buy them at the door.

. At Eddington, a Hunters Breakfast at the Eddington Salmon Club will run from 4-9 a.m.

. At Bangor, the 5th Annual Young Hunter’s Breakfast will be held at the Elks Club. Free hats will be given to the young hunters and a door prize consisting of a youth model .410 shotgun will be given away. The breakfast is free, but donations will be accepted and given to Maine’s Youth Fish and Game Association.

If you’d prefer eating after a busy day of hunting, you’ll have the chance:

. At Troy, Troy’s a Harvest Supper will run from 4:30-6:30 p.m. at the Troy Grange Hall, sponsored by the Troy Union Church. Supper is $5 for adults and $2.50 for children, and the menu consists of ham, scalloped potatoes and harvest vegetables. Contact Jan Cropley at 948-2524 for information.

And if you can’t make to a hunter’s meal on opening day, don’t be discouraged. There are more options available later in the season:

. On Saturday, Nov. 8, At Dover-Foxcroft, a Hunter’s Breakfast will be held at Foxcroft Academy, from 4-8 a.m.. It benefits Friends of Foxcroft Academy hockey and a raffle is planned. Call 564-2276 for information.

. Also on Nov. 8, a Hunter’s Supper and raffle drawing is scheduled for the American Legion Post in Troy. The supper runs from 4:30-6 p.m. Adults will eat for $5 while children pay $2.50. Call Ron Cropley at 948-2524 for information.

. On Saturday, Nov. 15, at Eddington, a Hunter’s Community Breakfast will be held in the Eddington School gym from 4-9 a.m.

Penobscot Fly Fishers plan events

The Penobscot Fly Fishers have a couple of events on tap in the near future.

On Nov. 2, the club will hold its sixth annual Fly Tying Symposium at the Bangor Parks and Recreation building on Main Street in Bangor.

Some of the premier tiers in the northeast will be tying flies and displaying their wares at the event, which runs from 9 a.m.-3 p.m.

Some of this year’s exhibitors include Joe Bertolaccini, Bob Blatz, Joe Brickham, Doug Bulley, Don Corey, Warren Duncan, Julie Johnston, Ron McKusick, Jerome Molley, Ed Muzzeroll, Ron Newcomb, Eddie Reif, Billy Smith, Alvin Theriault and Duane Vigue.

And on Nov. 5, the Penobscot Fly Fishers will hold their monthly meeting at Diesel’s Restaurant (formerly the Whale’s Back), next to Bob’s Discount in Brewer.

Black powder shoot on tap

The Penobscot Longrifles will hold their monthly black powder line shoot at their range in Stetson on Sunday.

The shoot begins at 10 a.m., and normal entrance fees apply: $20 for non-members and $15 for members.

From Exit 42 off Interstate 95, take Route 143 north. After crossing Route 2/100 in Etna, drive 11/2 miles, then turn left on the New Sweden Road.
