Colby wins; MMA, Bowdoin lose again

Colby College of Waterville earned its fourth victory of the season, while Maine Maritime Academy of Castine suffered its seventh straight loss during Saturday’s small-college football action involving Maine teams.

The White Mules scored twice in the fourth quarter to edge Bates College of Lewiston 27-14 in the first game of the C-B-B series, while Worcester State College (Mass.) downed MMA 46-21.

In another game, Wesleyan edged Bowdoin College of Brunswick 21-12.

At Ritchie Field in Castine, the Lancers built up a 40-7 lead on their way to a New England Football Conference victory over the Mariners.

Worcester State outgained Maine Maritime Academy only 552 yards to 532, but was the beneficiary of four MMA fumbles. Greg Wood rushed for 138 yards and two TDs to pace the Lancers, while Cean Oksanish passed for 165 yards and two scores.

Fullback Don Thibodeau of Shawmut powered the Mariners with 273 rushing yards and three touchdowns on 35 carries. Quarterback Pat Bard of Winslow ran for 122 yards on 30 carries and completed six of 10 passes for 84 yards.

Bangor’s Hampton Clarkson registered eight tackles for Worcester and recovered two fumbles, returning one of them 78 yards for a score.

Dan Rosen paced the MMA defense with 10 tackles and a fumble recovery.

Colby 27, Bates 14

At Waterville, quarterback Justin Smith hit tight end Roddy Ames for a touchdown on a 23-yard pass play in the final quarter to help Colby beat Bates in New England Small College Athletic Conference play at Seaverns Field.

The Mules had just 182 yards of total offense but took advantage of three fumbles by the Bobcats and picked off two passes that helped set up scores.

Colby trailed 14-13 heading into the final quarter when Smith eluded a Bates rush, rolled out to his left and found Ames at the goal line with 8:51 left. Smith and Ames also hooked up on the 2-point conversion pass to make it a 21-14 lead.

Wesleyan 21, Bowdoin 12

At Brunswick, Brennan Carney threw two touchdown passes and Wesleyan threw 283 passing yards to defeat Bowdoin NESCAC play.

The game remained scoreless until midway through the second quarter when Nick DiNardo handed off to Joel Pratt for a 20-yard run, setting up Andrew Stuerzel for the touchdown.

The Cardinals (4-2) put the game away in the third period with a touchdown pass from Carney to James Wallace to make it 21-0.

The Polar Bears (0-5) made it 21-6 in the fourth quarter with a 22-yard touchdown pass from Ricky Leclerc to Brian Durant. Bowdoin scored again after a 70-yard drive but a two-point conversion failed.
